my drums are crap and i have trouble stopping when i dont use engine braking..
anything i can do appart from get discs?

Take your car to a mini place and get them adjusted.

Very frequently.

More than once a month i find is useful.

Well i can.
But i don't own the tool to do it.
Which is why i take it down to my friendly local (not so local) and he does it for me.

I believe drum brakes on all cars are very similar (correct me if I'm wrong - I'm a beginner myself). I found the Readers Digest of Cars book very informative. It's an inch thick with glossy pics and easy to follow step-by-step guide on everything about repairing and restoring a wide range of cars. Most of which I have found relevent to minis :D

Buy a Leyland "black book" manual

Adjust the brakes using a spanner and turning the "sqare" nut behind each brake drum until it locks, then back it off until it's just off unlocked position.

From what you are describing (which is not much) I'd say you need to
1) bleed your brake system
2) get new brake shoes,
3) get new brake drums
4) adjust your brakes
5) SOME OR ALL OF THE ABOVE

If your drums are in good order then there is no reason why it won't stop very very well (for the first few times anyway, until they fade) :wink:
