Hi All,

Whats the go with replacing discolored/frayed seat belts.

The only info I can find on the VicRoads website is in regards to the type (lap, lap/sash, etc) of seat belts required by year, but nothing about if the actual seat belt needs to be certified.

Is it like replacing the Steering Wheel and a ADR Approved Wheel being required?

Indeed the replacement belts do need to be certified. If you have recoiling lap/sash belts then it is fairly easy to match a set up off the shelf. They're about 80 bucks a side.

Rewebbing static lap/sash belts is a bit trickier as the work must be performed and certified by a competent and authorised shop. These are the guys that spring to mind, but there are others.

At the very least from a roadworthy inspection if it doesn't have an Australian standards tag attached.

has anyone used Securon seat belts out of the UK? looks like I could get a complete set of them for around $100 less than the Klippan's they are selling here.

When you're buying seatbelts, should you really be trying to get the cheapest ones available?

The securons are probably perfectly safe, but aren't much good unless they are certified to Australian standards.

I know Hemco have come up a few times on the forum with a few people using their products. I will be looking at new belts from them soon.

Over here there are a couple of places that are certified to fit new belt material to your original buckles.
They're out by the airport - planes get the belts replaced every few years. Cheap & effective.

Seat belts don't have to be AS/NZS marked. E marked European ones are legit too since that is what all European cars arrive here with. I expect JIS and American std ones are good too. We finally started recognising overseas standards some years back.

ADRs and many Australian standards are just industry protectionism under a safety cover.

Incase anyone was interested in what my research turned up...

Universal Static Lap/Sash belts (for rear seats) run anywhere from about $85 to $120
Hemco quoted me $75 exGST (around $83), which was the cheapest price, and works ok for me becsuse they have a shop in Ballarat

Inertial Reel Lap/Sash belts for the front run from around $100 to $130

I did alot of research on Vicroads and couldn't find anything more conclusive than "replacement seatbelts must comply with the relevant standards" so i can speak to what mokesta said about EU belts being allowed, but what he said makes sense in regards to new cars comming arcross with belts from their own countries.

The final thing I found was that discoloration (which is my issue) doesnt seem to be a roadworthy item.
My mates Mazda 1300 passed with seatbelts that change from silver at the top to black at the bottom
And another firends Kombi passed with the same issue.

So at this stage, im just going to leave them and see what they say during the road worthy, at this point, id rather spend the money on other things, and i dont plan on taking passengers in the back seat anyway.


TLDR; Seat Belts are expensive!

Just a bit of information to do with what you wish.
Any webbing used in commercial abseiling only has a working life of 10 years as tests have shown that their ability to carry out the loads they are designed for dramatically drops off after that period. I know the guy that tests this equipment.
The thought of having seat belt that are say 30 years old!!! ...... well you might as well use a piece of dental floss as it will be just as effective. I will have updated belts any day.
