Post subject:  Hi I am wanting to buy a morris mini

Hi there all

I am looking at a mini that is for sale. It registered as a '69 mini and being sold as a 65 cooper S replica. It has alot of true cooper s characteristics. The chassis number starts with a M which seems odd to me. Do think it might have been rebodied? It is restored and in good condition. It has a mk 2 1275 motor, disc brakes and dual tanks. What is your thoughts to what it is worth? I understand it is a replica but the chassis number is what puts it in doubt. From net research I can't find any model that had a m at the start.

Your thoughts please!!!

Many 1969 cars did not have a build plate attached and ADR compliance plates were not yet mandatory. Therefore the chassis number on the rego had to come from a number stamped into the body. There were two numbers - the body number beginning with an M, stamped on the radiator shroud and the car number (often quoted as being about 500 more than the body number) stamped onto the firewall (although this may have been stamped somewhere else - someone will correct me).

If your car has been out of rego at any time and re-registered, whoever did that has used the body number beginning with the M. It may have had that mistake from the beginning. No biggie, quite common, no one is trying to pass it off as anything other than what it is - a 1969 K (deluxe) with Cooper S running gear equivalent to a 1965 model by the sound of it.

As to worth - it is worth what ever someone will pay for it!!! They are not an appreciating investment, rather an old car that needs to be driven to be appreciated.

I have seen prices from $6k to $25k on ads for similar cars recently. Some people will stick a high price on it just in case there is a sucker that coughs up. Others are realistic. Yet others put a price on it to ensure that the sale being forced by their wife never actually happens. In any case it all comes down to what you want to pay yourself.

cheers
michael

The prefix for a Mk2 should begin with YG2S . YG2S4 for a Mk2 Cooper S and YG2S1 for a Mini k . It will be stamped on the radiator shroud panel . Also on a 1969 model, the wipers should park on the passengers side ,came in around sometime in late 1968. Some cars also have the build number (about 500 less than the body number) stamped into the gutter on the passenger side of the scuttle panel

Unfortunately this one seems completely dodgy! I tend to believe the shroud has been a unprofessional stamping. The numbers are not alligned in a row. He told me has seen this posting and has withdrawn from the net for sale. What does that tell us? mmm
