Post subject:  Loose coils springs on rear
Hi all,

I have fitted a coil conversion and have the problem with loose springs on the rear when they are not under load. The springs are the red (medium) version from uk rather than the minitastic ones from Japan. I know that this is an issue that has been mentioned previously, but was wondering if anyone had any tips or tricks to stop them from falling out when they are not under load?

I have been considering limiting the travel of the rear trailing arm somehow or even having some spring seats turned out of aluminium so that they sit in the rear subframe more securely. Any thoughts or tips from previous experience would be great.

Hi Scrimo i have the coil conversion aswell but i havent fitted it yet , but i have read that adjusting your hi lo's helps , usually they only mention the front coils being loose when the car us jacked up and to use oversize bump stops.

So either adjust you hi lo's so they are under pressure more or fit smaller shocks if you want a more lowered look.
I will try to find a link i had for the fitment for a coil conversion as im sure they mention the looseness ? when the car is jacked up.

Also do you have any pictures of you setup as im pretty sure there's a difference between kits with the spacers .

Which shocks are you using Scrimo? I'm running MST springs with Minisport UK hi-los and KYB Gas-a-just shocks. When i set the hi-los to have tension the car is 4wd'ing bigtime, when i set them to a more appropriate ride height, the back springs become really loose when they aren't under load.

The KYB shocks in mine at the moment are way too soft for this application but would probably work really well with the harder donuts. I've ordered a set of lowered adjustable protechs which will hopefully limit the trailing arm travel and also help eliminate some of the body roll once i crank them up a bit. Will let you know how it goes, i'm sure others will be interested too if they have done a coil spring conversion or are thinknig about doing one.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I have my hilo's at full height and they are basically falling out when not under load. I have koni's front and rear but even at full extension the rear springs are loose. I will try to post some pics soon.

Unlike the rubber cones they do not sit snugly in the subframe seat either. As mentioned I am thinking of getting some alloy seats turned up but I don't want to affect the suspension travel too much.. I have fitted progressive bump stops on the rear and was thinking of running some ss cable between the bump stop posts and the subframe. This will limit the downward travel of the radius arm. I have seen these springs on racing minis with a similar set up for limiting the downward travel but not sure how it will work with rego..

Any way... Will let you know. I am thinking that I should have bought the Japanese springs as they seem a bit longer. That being said, I have never seen them fitted so not sure.

watch out - that how-to describes converting a hydrolastic car, not a dry car - the adapter there for the rear is for when you're taking the hydro bags out. Assuming you have a dry rear subframe, compare your rear subframe where the spring sits with the one in the pictures... very different

Hmmm, fair point Simon.. Will have a closer look at my subframe when I get home from work. Still, the gap in the photo you posted is almost on par with mine if I wind down the hi lo's. I took the rubber cones out myself so I assume that it is a dry subframe??? But I haven't seen enough wet sub frames disassembled to tell the difference between them.

The adapter in the other photo is similar to what I was intending to have made up.. Other than the afore mentioned gap when unloaded, the other Ppoblem is that the spring base has a much smaller diameter than the seat in the subframe.. Therefore it just shifts around in the seat without anything to control it's lateral shift. Just doesn't seem right..!!! An adapter would fix both issues I suppose! But it is odd that it is not included in the kit!

I fitted the Minitasitc springs from the UK. Correct diameter for the subframe, and they don't drop out when set to the correct height. This is on a road car with the Townride springs with the correct height setting.

maybe it's actually a wet subframe that had rubber cones put in it - I did that once (but you definitely don't have my old car)

The difference is very obvious - where the subframe in that picture has a hole, a dry subframe has a
hump that pokes out to locate the cone

Thanks Simon.. That's definitely the problem then as my rear subframe doesn't look anything like the one you just posted.. Now I just have to find someone to turn up some adapters.. Thanks again mate!

Hi Bill, thanks for posting that photo.. Here is a pic of mine fitted. The first pic is under load and the second is not.. You can see them drooping slightly because they are loose!

I note that yours has an alloy spacer on the seat end.. I am pretty confident this is the issue, as my kit did not come with those! I had another look at the kit on the mini spares site and it doesn't seem to have a spacer/adapter listed. I guess I got ones for a dry subframe when (as simon pointed out to me) mine is a wet subframe..

Bugger.. What a hassle! At least I have an idea what's going wrong now. Thanks for all the advice!
