Very curious- I've checked the Mini engine no. ID page and for the life of me, I can't figure it out... it doesn't match with the body, which is an old 850. It seems to be missing a letter. Can anyone help?

That number looks restamped Matt, shouldn't it be 10Y/Ta/H.....?
(In BMCspeak, where Ta = remote shift, Sa = S ratio gears) or didn't Australia have any lower case stamps... :D :D

The engine number on my original 1969 Mini "K" was 10YcTAH 4987S, that might give you some idea, not sure of the capitals though.

The C in the 10YC indicates that it is the third variant of the Australian 1100 motor. This means it is a Mini K motor.
The S on the end means the block was sleeved from the factory.

The 10Y on its own indicates that it is a Morris 1100 motor.

Yep...sure looks re-stamped....are the two blind rivet holes also a clue  remanufactured  Police Number :?:

English cars had the numbers riveted on. Australian cars have them stamped on the block.
So with imported English cars and blocks, the plates were chiselled off and restamped.
I'm sure others will have more detail about this.

The number looks legit, it's an Oz assembled block so has the 2 holes, but no rivets in (because it never had a plate).

It is not a Police issued number they take the form N661771P where N = NSW, 66= year issued, 1771 = number issued that year, P= Fuzz. I have bought 2 new motors over the years, that number was issued to one of them (new Oz built BMC short motors sold here had no number on em).

i have a 1098 here, same prefix but with a lower case a (ie 10Y/Ta/H1****) also with rivet holes. So they are just imported M1100 blocks?

Yes these blocks were all imported, but the numbers were stamped on here. Numbers with a Y in them were Australian assembled.
As you say, the `a' is in lower case, as it should be. Perhaps the OP's motor got reconditioned, the number decked off as usual then was restamped. That's probably why it has `A'. `a' etc lower case stamps are not real common when you go to buy a set.
