Hi
I've just bought a 1963 mini 850, and I am trying to change the oil
I've bought a filter, Ryco R2180p, after the 2200p didn't fit.
I'm wondering if I've got it right? The large sheet metal washer that goes under the filter looks home-made, what does the proper one look like?
The filter came with two flat rubber "o" rings and I know one is for the filter case, is the other just a different size for certain models? or is it supposed to go elsewhere?

going left to right, I've numbered them 1 to 10

change it to

1 2 3 6 7 4 9 5 10

can't quite make out what #8 is, looks like a little O ring?

only need 1 of the big round seals

the large flat washer may well be home made, but certainly needs to be there (edit - original one looks the same)

I may be mistaken, but i believe the flat rubber washer is supposed to go between the large and small washer as pictured. So that it seals the bottom of the cartidge, so it needs to seal on the bolt itself and on the washer.

As for the large washer, i can't remember but i think there may be different types for the different filters. There might be a recessed version. As long as when it's assembled on the housing that it has adequate spring tension so that oil will pass through the filter rather then push it down and bypass it. The idea being if the filter gets blocked it can bypass it, but bypassing isn't a great idea if it's still clean!

The 2 square section o-rings, choose whichever one fits your housing correctly, although you may need to dig the old one out if it is still in there. And when fitting the filter, i always hold the case up against the housing so that it sits correctly against the seal as i do the bolt up. If you don't get it square it may leak.

Lastly the bottom seal, what is provided may not be fat enough to actually seal between the cupped washer and the casing. In the past i have just used some appropriately sized o-rings.

So i believe you have it ordered right... but i could be wrong

The way that you have it laid out is absolutely correct ............

Me too, IMO only a rivet counter would use a cartridge filter on a daily driver these days. They are a messy PITA...

Can you still get the felt Cooper S filter cartridge? Back in the 60s we used to flush them out with petrol from the inside, then refit... :P

I have assembled the filter as I had it laid out, with only one of the two big O rings.

The middle rubber washer is not the correct one, I made it for temporary use. I have a filter ordered from ebay that includes all o rings.

Minisport sell the original cotton filters to suit these motors

I plan to get a spin on one day, but the engine doesn't run yet, so I needed to prioritise

I hope to start it up this weekend
