Hey Guys,

I just wanted to adjust my clutch as it was proving harder to put into first and reverse when stationary,I was having a read of a few of the mini manuals and I have figured out i have the pre verto clutch with no throw out stop bolt. I was attempting to adjust the adjustable stop and the process appears to have worked, i took the lock nut back a few turns and then the stop nut out a few turns and locked it back up. it all appears to work however i don't fully understand how i am suppose to have a gap of 1.5mm between the arm and the stop nut, the arm will just naturally fill the space.

I made sure i hadn't done it wrong by screwing the stop nut in until i achieved this gap but the clutch was useless and just pressed straight to the floor. So i wound it back out and set it up and it works really well now but is this right????? how do i know the clutch release bearing is not rubbing hard on the clutch thrust plate ?????

take the spring off before you adjust it - and 1.5mm is too much, book says .020", which is .5mm

remove spring, pull the arm out by hand, measure, adjust, repeat

ahhhhh i didn't take the spring off!! so i took the spring off and the gap was about the thickness of a ten cent piece. Is slightly more than the required gap bad? if so why? i only ask because i am happy with the current clutch position and if it doesn't need to be changed then I'll leave it. the clutch point is currently about half way up the pedal which to me feels good.

Having a larger gap just requires more pedal travel before actuating the clutch as the spring will pull the bearing further away from the clutch.

After many years using a spring I have taken Doc's advice and removed it.

Feels fine but I reserve the right to curse him when the bearing collapses (prematurely, in my opinion

Rovers with Verto clutch use the same self-adjusting system, there is no spring, and they still use a ball thrust release bearing (not a carbon ring like some cars).
Mine is still fine, using an RHP later type bearing. If/when? it ever dies I have a new Timken flat one to replace it.
