Depends how busted it is.... :?
Last one I fixed (Cooper S box) had busted both the planet (spider) gears, luckily none of the bits made it into the gearbox. Parts used to fix were a competition diff pin, 2 new planet gears, 2 thrust washers, diff gaskets and seals. Couple of hundred $$ plus labour. Not too bad....

A real bad bust-up though can mean the diff pin breaks, and spears out thru the casing... means another gearbox case and lots of work.

Yep, pull it out and take the diff cover off. All will be revealed...!
I'd use a competition pin, not the std knurled one. When I stripped mine for a look see after 65,000 miles +, it only had .0005" (that's 1/2 a thou') wear, and the gears were good. What the hell, I replaced the pin & gears anyway. The olde ones will go into my son's Clubbie next time..
The standard pin is not particularly robust once it starts to wear.

BTW how do you know it's the diff? An auto should be easier on the diff gears..!

Some Minis (Cooper S etc) I've worked on had bronze side washers instead of fibre, better if you can find them..
Dunno if they were original, but they don't fall to bits..

If the spider gears are shagged, the pin will be too. Buy a competition pin from Karcraft or someone. They are stronger, wear less and last longer.
Also the copper washers will be toast and probably the fibre side washers..

Don't buy anything until you've stripped it.. :!:

<edit> make sure you get all the broken bits out of the gearbox...!
