I went through this debacle when deciding on downgrading my daily.
I opted for a BMW Mini - and I am so glad I did.

I did that, and went from a 74 leyland mini 1100 to an 88 rover mini 1275spi with air con and it's great! Much more comfortable and reliable now the bugs have been ironed out. The only downside I have faced is that with so much more things in the rover it can be a lot more complicated and expensive when something goes wrong. However that's not normally as often :)

i have 2 Rover Minis here in WA.

I had to really back up the wifes everyday 1988 auto.. Just in case! Did the sums on a 2002 BMW Mini Auto and a Rover auto and the Rover won....

You can get a Rover SPi Mini auto for the same money as the 2002 BMW Mini Auto and in 5yrs the BMW Mini will be worth less than half what you paid! The Rover will still be holding strong.. for me that was a win!

It was your wifes car that started the idea , just have to find one .

My 99 Rover has just moved on..........with some regrets mind you. It's Archie heal was 2'nd gear, Grieg @ Mini Classics sorted that issue and after that it was a joy to drive. Ideally suited to a daily drive the SPI started first time every time even after being layed up for 3 months. A/C worked without a hitch cooling the car down within a couple of minutes. Horses for courses.

mini3r, have you had one imported? If so how much did it set you back?

Bazzamagoo you would need to set yourself a budget, first for the car, model, condition and options, that is your biggest variable, so many choices. Then for the import costs and then getting it on the road, compliance, repairs, transport, registration and insurances within australia , about 6-7000 would easily cover that part.
