Interestingly, the engine numbers for the 10 or so vehicles before and after this chassis number in the Cooper S register all begin with 40xxx. Engines weren't installed in sequence but a difference of 2,000 means this car stands out from the others in the list. Perhaps the assumed engine number used to create the new plate as mentioned by Phill above is wrong. Build date for that chassis number is Sept 1966.
On a register I have there are a few that are way out of sequence, I remember someone suggesting a possible explanation being that if a problem was discovered with the motor very early in the cars life eg on or even before delivery to the dealer, and a replacement motor was fitted, then the factory would produce a fresh new plate for the car.
This could also explain the stamping all from behind in the case mentioned by justminis with his Black S. If the factory made a fresh plate they would just stamp the lot at once with the same punch machine.
