Hi all,

Should the wipers on my 75 clubman auto park?
At the moment they just stop where they are when I turn off the switch.

This can be One of three things, 1 Damaged park plate, this is the metal ring fitted
to the back of the big plastic gear, 2 No earth wire from wiper to body
3 the switch may be faulty or a wire has dropped of one of the connections
most of the time it is N 1 or No 2
there are other wiser people on the forum like Convertible Mini or Dr Mini
that may be able to be more help

Yes they should. Even the wipers on my 69 park.

The wiper motor has a revolving plate inside the case on the large gear where there are two brushes. One on the outside and one further in. A machined gaps in the plate are brought into play when you turn the wiper switch off.

When the switch is turned off, another secondary 12 volt path makes its way through the motor, the plate, the switch and to earth. This causes the wiper motor to continue to spin until the machined gap in the wiper motor plate breaks the circuit.

This is by clever design exactly where the wipers are in the parked spot.

As said above, the circuit is simple enough once you understand it. Its kind of identical to the normal circuit, but operates only when the switch is turned off. So check the switch wiring is intact, the plate is not too badly damaged, the brushes still move smoothly to touch the plate, and the second 12 volt supply is there.

You are almost right there Mick.
There is also a 3rd brush, when the slip ring hits the park position circuitry short circuits the armature providing dynamic braking, so it screams to a halt.
This is peculiar to the Oz round motors, the UK ones don't have this feature.

Almost every motor this type I've pulled down needed a new slip ring. Water gets into the gearbox housing via the cable rack, and can't get out. It's a good idea to drill a ~2mm hole at the lowest point (as installed) to let it out. A bit of grease on the slip ring helps life too.

Lots of good info collated here. From lots of knowledgeable people, much more knowledgeable than me. With a 75 Clubby, it should definitely have a two speed version of the 12AUW.

If there's any possibility that anyone's ever messed with your wiring, it's definitely worth looking under the dash first. It's a lot less frustrating chasing wires than reinstalling a wiper motor (especially when you're doing it alone, trying to locate the motor, washers each side of the body, and the screws, all whilst working around the door).

yep... sucks hey... i wonder if my non parking wipers will pass the roadworthy on monday...

thanks for all the info... i'll check all the wiring first before I start pulling things apart

So to save starting a new thread, thought i would add onto this one. I have a '78 van that wont park the wipers. originally it had the earth wire hanging loose and i thought reattaching this would fix it, but not that simple it seems. with the multimeter it seems even with that wire off there is zero resistance between the motor body and chassis, now i would've thought this meant the motor would be able to complete the separate circuit and self park when the switch is turned off? aside from not parking they work fine and travel the right distance across the screen. should i just overhaul the whole lot?

The wiper switch is as important as the slip ring and brush internal to the motor.

When the motor turns off, the switch switches in a circuit from the motor, through the switch and to ground. I would ensure this circuit is in place first, as well as the 12 volt wire from the fuse to the wiper motor, then look at the slip ring inside the motor.

Apart from the slip ring rusting away (because BLMC made it out of mild steel) the 3 little beryllium copper brushes/fingers wear away on the ends too.
Whilst it is possible to build them up with SBA45 silver solder (and a steady hand), someone here had new (assembled) ones for sale?
I can't remember if it was John Smidt, or Tony (Convertible Mini).

So I finally found some time to pull the motor apart, The ring was rusted away and one of the contacts had snapped off, replaced those. now i put it all back together and it still isnt parking (working fine apart from that), I pulled the switch out and found it only has 3 connections with a 4th hanging loose. I saw in a picture somewhere that there should be 4 connects to the back on the wiper switch (2 speed motor) and there are only 3 spade terminals on my one. could someone confirm I need a new switch from the photos before I order one.

You also have the clock/speedo switch face there

I have a heap of that face switch here but still haven't seen what car used them or what there for I only got them for the piece that goes in the hole in the switch panel them tabs on the side most of mine were broken and had tape wrapped around the switch to hold them in there

So I just pulled them apart and rebuilt mine in them and been good ever since
