Can I get you to check the number please as what you have stated is incorrect. The number should take the form

021 which is Mini or 022 which is Mini S
D which is Mini Sedan manual transmission. If the vehicle was produced between January 1973 and March 1974 then this letter would be A
2S which is 2 door Saloon
1 or 2 which is trim level
M09 or M10 which is engine size of 998 or 1098cc
and then the serial number.

There should be a build date on the build plate as well.

M10 the build plate indicates a 1098cc engine however the true test comes from the code on the engine. If it is 10??? then it is 1098cc however if it is 99H??? then it is definately 998cc.

Means it was built as a 998, but...
Many 998 (eg. 99H) motors got a 1098 crank & pistons put in when rebuilt over the years, it's an easy way to get 10HP and 8ft/lb of torque for nothing. 8)
[edit] for clarity
