G'day,

Sorry for the newby question  but I'm looking a mini as a daily driver which has a rebuilt engine and gearbox 1340 1 3/4" carb (Not sure what exactly), electric dizzy and a 296 cam.

Well for starters i don't know what the 296 in a 296 cam means but have read that its a race cam, So is it too much for a daily driver? (I don't drive far to work about 10kms but make the trip 3 times a day).

Cheers.

I've got a 286 cam and it's a pig to drive in Sydney traffic I don't recommend using it as a daily driver, I use mine as a weekend car

When you say its a pig to drive what do you mean, does it stall easy and need a lot of revs to make decent power?

Power comes on from about 2500rpm, it can be a pain to get up and moving without decent revs from the lights and sitting in traffic is a chore ( lumpy idle, ultralight flywheel, snappy clutch, though it is fun to drive when you give it some, (l can now break traction into 3rd on a dry road) But I wouldn't recommend it as a daily car as it's pain to drive in traffic as it needs to rev to get up and going, sounds awesome though.

Ok thanks for that.

I take it a 296 will be similar characteristics to a 286. Fortunately Bundy doesn't have much traffic however the wife would need to be able to drive it and if its challenging it may not be the pick.

why don't you ask to take it for a test drive?

Yeah i will, its not local so a test drive is a couple hour round trip.

Ohh. No point driving several hours if it is not appropriate

Yeah thats right.

My current mini needs a fair bit of work and this one has recently had a rebuild (Guy says he has $10,000 worth of receipts) by some mini specialist in WA and he's moved to QLD. He claims its only done around 2000/3000Kms since it was rebuilt and i figure would be cheaper to start again with a mini that's had $$ spent on it already then pour them into my little 998.

Has a new radiator, starter motor and Aldon? distributor and good electrics.

I used to run a 649 Race cam around Rocky in the early 90's and didn't find it too bad.
However engine didn't come on cam and smooth out till over 80 in top and idled at around 1100 rpm.
Not a tame round town driver but useable. With a 1340 it would probably have enough torque to pull it off.
Definitely not suited to bumper to bumper peak hour traffic though.
Make a day of the trip to see car and do the tourist thing.
Either way not a wasted trip.
Cheers Rob

Whereabouts is the car? Maybe someone here can have a preliminary look for you.

I used to live in Bundy, not much traffic but some fun roads around there....

I agree with Rob1970 , if you have the time , make the trip , could end up with a good buy .

Yeah that's the fortunate thing about bundy some good fun roads and I can get to work and back without going through a set of traffic lights just a couple of roundabouts.

Plus we have Chris Ellis in town (No doubt you dealt with him if you had your mini while in Bundy)
