Hi all,

Another quick gearbox question.

I stripped down a very original 22G1128 gearbox on the weekend that looks to have never been rebuild and to be honest the gearset in it is possibly the best i have seen, however the synchro rings are totally worn out and almost smooth and do not lock on many of the gears, however the gears themselves also seem to be quite worn and i am worried that new Synchros will not be enough and gears might be required also.

Are their gear manufacturers out there that can apply more synchro material to the gears? is this even possible?

Now just working out if i will buy all parts here or minispares, just checking on their freight as its not as cheap as it used to be.

3-4 years ago, the guy at the Gearbox Factory, Revesby, said he was interested in finding out what the sintered type coating on the sychro cone was made from, and whether it could be reapplied to an existing gear.
Also, many of the remote-type 4 synchro gear parts have been available from MiniSpares at discount prices for NOS. I ask them to use the post office and not expensive courier services for posting. They claim couriers offer better security on delivery- but the PO seems very reliable!

Hi Grant
When I rebuilt the original S 3 synchro box from my Black S, I had the get the synchro surface on top gear redone and used these guys -

http://www.aonemetal.com.au/

That was in 1990, has been fine ever since tho not done a lot of miles. Had to send a new synchro cone so they could match. Give them a call to see if they still do this stuff.

If you get anywhere, let us all know ;) I have a few gears that have worn cones as well, but are otherwise good.

I have called the company Steve has mentioned and he recalls doing this for Steve and would like to see the gears and a new cone, I just have to make the time to get over and see him...

I will keep you all posted.
