Hi all
I have a new mini (new to me anyway).
I think its a 1964 850.

The VIN plate has:-
TYPE YMA2S1
Car no 55777
Engine No 8Y/U/H16190
Colour 1/NURBURG WHITE/3

Stamped in the Radiator cowl is a circle with M2 and a 15 stamped in it.
Beside this is the number 56063

Can anyone explain all this please.

Regards
Phil

Car no 55777 This is your car's build number - if JRA had not destroyed the records you would have been able to look it up using this :(
Engine No 8Y/U/H16190 See explanation from Morris 1100 below
Colour 1/NURBURG WHITE/3

Stamped in the Radiator cowl is a circle with M2 and a 15 stamped in it. M2 is the 850 body style number - think of it as the part number for the body
Beside this is the number 56063 This is the serial number of the body (not the assembled car - see above)

Can anyone explain all this please.

Phil

Y = Australian
M = Morris
A = 800cc to 999cc
2S = 2 door saloon
1 = 1st model in range = Mini 850 (2 = Deluxe, 3 = Mini-Minor)

With the engine numbers 8AM / U / H 657885 is a British built motor and 8Y U H 14368 is an Australian motor.
8 = 800 to 899 (so it must be an 850)
Y = Australian
U = Magic wand gearchange
H = High Compression.

I am sorry to say but that list would be the worst one I have ever seen. :shock: A Morris 1100S motor in a 1275LS :roll:

The main ones in Australia....

Early Roundnose
YMA2S1 = Morris 850
YKA2S1 = Morris Cooper
YMA2S2 = Morris Mini Deluxe
YMA2S3 = Morris Mini-Minor
YKG2S4 = Morris Cooper S

Late Roundnose
YG2S1 = Morris Mini 1100 (Mini K)
YG2S2 = ?
YG2S3 = ?
YG2S4 = Morris Cooper S (Mk2)
YA2S5 = Morris MiniMatic.

Early Square Nose Note, they are not badged Leyland.
YG2S6 = Mini 1100 (cheap model)
YG2S7 = Mini Clubman
YG2S8 = Clubman GT

Later Square Nose There is a lot more to this section but I won't confuse the issue yet.
021 = Leyland Mini
022 = Leyland Mini S

Last Square Nose
XNPAB18Y = Leyland Mini
XNAHB18Y = Leyland Mini S
XNFAD18Y = Leyland Mini 1275LS

Edited twice. 8)

Thank you all.
Is there a way of knowing the Year/month of manufacture from these numbers.

Phil

I think the only missing bit is the numbers on the radiator shroud.
The M2 and 15 on the shroud translates as...
M = Morris
2 = 2 Door
15 = ADO15 = Mini 850
The number 56063 is the body number.
The number 55777 on the ID plate (and I assume on the firewall below the plate) is the car number.

I think it is the middle to second half of 65. At a rough guess July/August.

According to the good book, BMC & Leyland Mini Identification Guide, YMA2S1 55777 was built November 1964

My guess which is based on the average number of cars built per month. It is a very rough way of doing things and gets more inaccurate as time goes on!
I just looked at some other figures and my estimate is about 4000 cars out by Jan 64!

Working it out using the revised figure and it works out to be Feb 65. The only real way to know is looking at owners handbooks which is probably how the BMC & Leyland Mini Identification Guide numbers are worked out!

Cool! That raises the number of cars per month to about 1177 at that point. (I had been working on 1003 using the total number of cars and the full production period but obviously production of the 850 slowed down a lot when the Deluxe was released in March 65)

What about some other identifying features of the car.. does it have the 2 piece or hoop style hood lining? Does it have the uk or aus style boot? Those all changed mid 64 didnt they??
