When did Rover start fitting halogen headlamps?

My 95 has them and the wiring behind looks unmessed with but not sure if they are aftermarket and don't want to run the risk of switches and wiring issues

I think they introduced them from early 90's, also depended on the intended market too. As for the issue of switches etc, i'm assuming you mean burning them out, the trick is not to overload them. Anything std, i.e. 60-70 watt high beam should be fine but above that you should run relay(s). The wiring in mine shows slight browning and it's always had std headlights, so I think they would really benefit from a relay. Actually even a std headlight works better through a relay, more power. Don't over tax your alternator by adding too much load.

It is always advisable to fit and wire headlight relays if you want better lights and switches to last longer. No matter what other people say. As long as you wire them up correctly not bodgie and cut corners.
