Post subject:  Steering Rack Worn (Left Side)
So i have a Mini Clubman and im currently trying to get a roadworthy.
One of the things on the list is that i have a worn steering rack.

What would be the best way to go about fixing it?
Hopefully its not to replace the whole thing cause that would be a pain in the butt!

You need to have it checked out. There are four ball joints to check being the track rod ends on the steering arms, and the inner ball joints where the track rods connect to the inner rack. These can be checked with the rack in the car, but anything more than this is a steering rack out job, which means dropping the rear of the sub frame to get some access.

If you pull back the rubber gaiters on the inner ends, and have a busty assistant rock the steering wheel back and forth, you should be able to see where the movement is coming from. Do this both sides, having the wheels placed firmly onto something solid while it is also jacked up off the ground (like on ramps). Doing this can help show the problem more.

What would be the best way to go about fixing it? Put it at the very top of your list of things to do...find an expert.

Hopefully its not to replace the whole thing cause that would be a pain in the butt! Not replacing it might be any even bigger pain the butt and elsewhere on your body :roll:

the busty assistant would be me hahahaha!

there seems to be movement up and down past the ball joint
oh man this is looking to be the biggest pain in the butt. i have to decide whether i want to do it myself or get someone to do it!

Got a good local garage to do it. What it cost me in money it saved me in time and swearing
Job done
Got new brakes fitted at same time

hey rob!

how much did it cost you roughly? so i can call a few places and get some quotes, i dont wanna get ripped off cause im a girl. it happens way too often for my liking! hahaha


ALSO! are there any temporary fixes to stop the clunking so i can get a roadworthy?

If I were in your position I'd call a few of the Mini businesses to get their thoughts and a quote. They will have the knowledge and parts to do the job the quickest and best way.

I see you are in Melbourne. Personally I've used Link Automotive in Mitcham to prepare my car for a roadworthy, but there may be others closer to where you live.

Please stop wondering and get it to an expert Mini repairer ASAP :D

Jesmine (I hope that's the correct spelling, as per your introduction post?),

The key piece of advice from those who know the Mini well is that there are a few things that need to be done correctly when working on a Mini steering rack that may not be obvious to a non-Mini mechanic. The replacement parts used, the sequence of assembly and the tightening of the U-bolts that hold the rack in position are all critical to avoid strain on the steering components and possible failure. That's why it's been suggested you use someone who knows what they are doing and has done it before, and not necessarily what's most convenient, like your local garage. From what you've said I'm guessing you know all this, but I thought it worth reinforcing.
