Post subject:  Clutch housing question

I've been given a box of mini parts from an early 850 mini (engine no 212xxx) that had been sitting under a house. Most of it is rusty and beyond salvagable, but the clutch housing looks in good condition.

Would this fit a 1970's 998-1275 motor?, somewhere i remember reading that the idler gear bearing diameter changed in the late sixties to a larger size to make it stronger. Cant remember if this change was in the clutch housing/gearbox case or both?

From https://www.somerfordmini.co.uk/eshop/i ... age&id=144

Quote:
For 1959-68 models (3 synchro gearbox), none of the later 4 synchro flywheel housings can be used in place of the original. For 1968-79 models (not 1275), flywheel housing DAM6259 may be used, so long as the special idler bearing with sleeve DAM3745 is also fitted.
For 1968-79 models (1275 only), flywheel housing DAM6257 may be used, so long as the special idler bearing with sleeve DAM3745 is also fitted.

For 1979-91 models (1275 carburetter), flywheel housing TRD10015 may be used, so long as the crank sensor hole blanking plate LCG10001 and two screws FS105101 are also fitted. Additionally, TRD10015 may also be used for 1968-79 1275 models so long as the blanking plate and screws are fitted along with the special idler bearing and sleeve DAM3745.

Which is good to know - I knew of the difference between the A and A+ series drop gear bearing sizes being different, but didn't know there was so much more!

I did up a 4 synchro remote gearbox in a Moke recently that had an early flywheel housing on it.

The 3 synchro and 4 synchro boxes both have a 0.75" diameter idler shaft. But the 3 synchros had 1.0" OD uncaged needle bearings, the 4 synchros had 1.062" OD caged needle bearings. So this box has 1 of each! It still works fine... 8)

Gee i'm sorry i asked  so it looks like i could use it with a 4 sync remote box, but i'd be better off with a 4 sync housing.
cheers guys

Just in case You are using a Rod change gearbox, Be aware that.
The Clutch Housings For a 3spd & 4 Spd Sync remote & 850 type change
and the clutch Housing for the rod Change Gearbox are Different

John, are not the 4 synchro remote clutch housings the same design as most Oz rod change ones? Apart from the late (A+ style) rod change ones with the bigger idler shaft...?

This has really opened a can of worms. John FYI - The housing would be fitted to a 4 syncro remote box not rod change.

Hi Doc,
No Mate They are different the rod change type has an extra piece cast into the housing to stop the selector rail from over traveling which can but not always result in the 3rd and top hub popping the springs and balls out This is at the bottom of the clutch housing as You would understand, If You put both types together You will see what I mean,
Now I know people may say I have done it with out any problems, And well they may have but I have seen a lot of examples where people have not been so lucky

John, so does you last statement mean:

If you fit a 3 syncro or remote 4 syncro clutch housing onto a rod change box there may be an issue of balls and springs popping out of the 3rd and top hub.

But a rod change clutch housing (Not A+) will be fine to use with a 4 sync remote gearbox.

I would Remove the Lug before I used it but there are no other problems that I am aware of
