I was wondering what body differances or body features are between a 998 cooper and an 850 what are the obvious ways to tell a 998 cooper from an 850.

Body (numerical) number is low- not many Coopers were made.
Neatly cut hole for the remote shift, not the usual butchered.
Chrome trim around top of doors.

Is there any actualy body changes between the two.

Vinal covered dash i believe coopers Had.
100m spedo, oval binical
english boot lid.
Disk breaks

Engine: 998 12g295 head twin su.

I think these early cars 850/Cooper had a common floor pressing.
Hole for 850's magic wand shift should have a steel plate spot welded over it.

Early 850 had the UK bootlid too.

As I said check the body number stamped into the firwall. Only a couple of thousand were made. 1st one was 501 as usual. If number has 5 digits it's definitely an 850 shell....

There should be 2 demister vent tubes in behind the dash trim, and a proper Cooper heater. The brackets it hangs on at front were only fitted to Cooper shells.

The cooper heater bracket was also fitted to Austin and Morris super deluxes UK model but there are a few out here. Brochade trim if any left and you might even have body ID number in driver and passenger foot well.

Never saw brocade trim on any Oz made Cooper, including 997-998.
Our trim was local, carpets were different too.

If you send PM to graham in aus, I think he has a list of Oz Cooper body numbers & when produced.. he owns a couple.:P

He didn't say Aussie or English just asked for identifying features of early coopers 997 998 1071and a lot of those we see here are english cars I was just trying to help.

You are misguided about heater bracket and heater ducting as other models have those features. Super and Super deluxe which were very similar to early coopers share some or all of the interior and exterior features and there are also a number of these cars in the country.

If car isn't an early cooper could be Super or super deluxe import the more info the better.

If you are looking at an Australian Cooper 998 (round holes in roof gutter). It should have a small Australian number plate size bootlid. The 997 came with English long type but the 998 was the first Mini to feature the Australian bootlid (as it predates the Deluxe).

There should also be factory mounts for a boot board in the boot. Simliar to Cooper S but the boot board was extra long as it was for a single tank boot.

Owned a couple of cooper 997's. Never saw the plate welded in the floor for the magic wand. Presumed maybe they had a different pressing on the australian cars to exclude this?

I miss my shadow blue/white cooper :(
