Post subject:  Gonna have a crack at calibrating the speedo

My speedo is waaay out. It's roughly reading 80 when I'm doing 60, 130 when I'm doing 100. I'm going to use the "Repairing Jaeger & Smiths Speedometers" PDF by Anthony Rhodes to set it right. I've also calculated that at around 3500 RPM in final gear (with my wheel/tyre size and final drive ratio) I should be doing 100 kmph, or 2100 RPM for 60 kmph.

I think, if I read it correctly, this is what I'll do:
I'll drive down the street at 2100 revs in fourth, record what the speedo is reading (should be 80 ish), take out the speedo, turn the needle to what it was reading, then whilst holding the disc at the back turn it to 60.

I'll post tomorrow how it went.
Thought y'all might be interested.

Hey, I'm definatley interested in this..

I took my speedo out the other day, and gave it a nice clean up.. replaced all the coloured bits of plastic (behind the indicator light, h/beam light, ignition, oil) they were getting discoloured.

Some of my bulbs are gone though, they're the 12v screw in type. I've been asking around where to get these but no one seems to be able to get them. Anyone know?

My speedo is also out a fair bit, let us know how it goes!

Hey FatMaserati,

Can you post the PDF on here? or maybe someone can host it for you or you have a link to the site you downloaded it from?

I would be interested in having a look even if I don't try calibrating mine.

I would also check your sppedo against a known accurate speedo just to make sure (your tacho may not 100% accurate either) and it beats getting speeding fines

Well if a copper pulled you over he'd ask you did you realise you were doing 80 back there? you'd go no i thought i was doing 100.

I did that with NAV.
I found you needed a little bit of preload in the spring to get it to stay on the little stopper pin.
My speedo has never been right over 80km/h cause when it says 90 i'm actually doing 100 and 100 = 110, but 80 is spot on 80

Just finished calibrating it now. It's now fairly close (much closer than reading 80 when I'm doing 60) probably within a couple of k's. I think I have set the speedo to read slightly faster than what I'm doing to be on the safe side. So when it reads 60, i'm probably doing 57/58 roughly. I thought this was a good idea to be on the safe side of the speed limit, since it's not 100% accurate. I'll get it tested properly one day. But otherwise, the calibration worked a charm.
