| Post subject: | Identifying 998 motor |
Hello all, I have a 998 motor (have measured bore and stroke). I don't have an engine number for it but it has flat top pistons and a crank casting number 12a1451 so it's a standard 998 I believe. But where there is meant to be a hole for the mechanical fuel pump there is no hole cast in the block. Did some early or late 998s come out with electric fuel pumps or could it be a cooper block? The Cooper block might be a chance but there is also the early Morris 1100 block that doesn't have the fuel pump hole. (assuming someone may have swapped a block or crank) Does it have cut off rivets in the holes where the engine number should be? |

Thanks for any feedback Daniel It could even be an old 997 Cooper block, they bore out OK to 998/1098 size (I did it once). |

isn't there also a part number cast into the block? |

How about early 850 blocks? They came with electric fuel pumps so did the block have the mechanical pump hole? |

The block has the holes for the id tag to rivet to ( did the morris 1100's not have these holes?). The number stamped where the id tag should be is 10003544, don't know if that means anything. Also noticed the harmonic balancer serial number is 12g282... |

They all had the holes. Imported motors have cut off rivets in those holes from removing the plate and the numbers restamped. Local motors have empty holes with the numbers stamped. The holes were put there as part of the machining process on a transfer machine. So empty holes should mean it is a locally made motor. The Clubmans from around 1971-72 have engine numbers starting with 1000 and 1001 but they should have fuel pump holes. |
