Post subject:  New Brochure uploaded.. Now questions..

Hi guys, just uploaded a new brochure. THe best one with a Cooper S engine bay I have ever seen..

Now were they or not, standard. I always thought it was an aftermarket accessory on the clutch and brake master cylinders, but I doubt that they would have fitted these for the brochure..
ALso I thought that the hose clamps were double wire.. Once again different... :? :? :?

The wire wound clips were very early, I'm not sure they were fitted after 65 even...

The utilux jubilee clips were the ones to use on my 69 for example, I've got them but will retrofit them one of these days... I don't know where I got my wire wound clips from, but they're wrong on my car.

Great engine bay pic. Interesting to see the way the brake booster and brake lines were originally positioned.

I'm like you Brett I love looking through the old magazines and brochures at stuff like this. If you got that one recently I was probably bidding against you. :D It's a nice brochure, thanks for sharing.

Can I ask how you know the Brochure is 1968, does it have a date?

I have a feeling that often the cars that were photographed for brochures where the same cars being used for the road tests in magazines etc, so they occasionally may have differed a little with add ons like that. I think the sight tubes were an accessory, they probably got added to the car at some stage.

The tricky part is often the cars for the brochures are pre production prototypes so they differ anyway. A good example is the white Cooper S rego DLD 322 that appears airbourne on the cover Wheels magazine in August 1965. If you look closely its the same car used for the photos in this Brochure for the S.

Note this car has totally different plumbing for the heater and the crankcase breathing, and the brake pipes are all rough and hand bent. Even the Wheels article notes it's a prototype car.

Another car that appears in lots of road tests is a dark (black?) Cooper S rego DXK 522. I'ts in at least 5 different magazine road test that I've seen. There's a few good shots of it's engine bay, It's a little more standard (below)

Don't forget over the life of any of these models there were lots of little changes e.g hose clips, plug caps, starter solenoids, heater taps etc. etc.

Note also that when they resprayed the motors in Australia they just sprayed the oil cap too  , I've seen this a few times.

Phil, you can tell it is the (late) 68 brochure by the Leyland logo in the corner.

No such thing as a Mk 1½.
All the things that are said to make up the mysterious Mk 1½ are fitted anywhere between 67 and 69.
Was there a Mk 1½ Deluxe?
How about the Mk 1½ Morris 1100?

I know there was no such thing. But its a MK1 Update, yet not a MK2 :D

Update or a series of running changes?

What parts do you think make up a Mk 1½?
If it is the trim then Me, Phil and Slacko all own Mk 1½s.
If it is the wipers it is just Phil and Slacko.
If it is the black gear stick and steering column bracket it is just Slacko.

I would say interior change.... Ford accept that as AU2 when they changed the interior Its a major change to the consumer who walked into the show room.

My first S, car 1090, had the master cylinder extension tubes and the wire hose clamps. I was a little annoyed that my 68 S didn't have the extension tubes. The tubes made it a lot easier and less messy to top up the fluid. The 68 also had the utilux hose clamps and the top ones are still on the car.

"No such thing as a Mk 1½...."

My policy is to never use never where Minis are concerned....

Mk 1 1/2 is a term used for "transition" cars which have a mixture of Mk I and II parts. Such cars are not uncommon.

IMHO the term (1 1/2) is just as valid as "Mk I" - which was never (sic) an official label but just a descriptor applied later to differentiate them from the later Mk IIs.

Cheers, Ian

PS MSport (Adelaide) will sell you "genuine" or reproduction cylinder neck extenders. Of course the (second hand) genuine items are much more expensive than the (new) copies....

Define transition? You are making out that it is the very last cars, Brett is saying it is 2/5ths of the whole production run.

It appears from some people that the transition from Mk 1 to Mk 2 was longer than the production run of the Mk 2.

Which bits make a car a Mk 1½? At what point do you draw the line

Horizontal oil cooler?
Hardy spicer uni joints?
2 screw lights?
Covered hydro pipes?
68/69 interior and seats?
Left parking wipers?
Black gear stick?
Black steering column mount?

Yeah I've got to say the term Mk1.5 irritates me a bit.

BMC made many changes along the way with the MK 1 and clearly never felt the need to promote it as a new series until the Mk2. There are too many changes over too long a period for it to be any kind of accurate description.
