Well, it seems a bit crazy to me considering it's an electrical gauge, but I removed all other gauges form the car and went for a drive. Sure enough, the Tacho is noisier than the engine! It's kind of a rattley, vibration type noise, and it only comes into play between about 2800-3400 RPM (you know, right where you spend most of your time driving). I began to open it up to see if I could find the problem, lube it up, tighten it down or generally fix it, but as I got stuck in I started to get worried I was about to take something apart that wasn't meant to come apart. Has anyone experienced this before? Should I have another crack at taking it apart, and simply go "all the way" this time? Might it be possible to find a new/used Magnolia Tacho for a '98 Rover? Thanks for any help! |

Not worth fiddling with, just get new one and maybe some magnolia decals frim stick fingers. |

Where does the noise emanate from? Is it the rattling glass? |

The Tacho might be electronic but it still has a mechanical meter movement within...if its been dropped etc then the delicate little flower of a movement might rattle or bind...also if the bridge that locates the main spindle has been tampered with, then the movement is gunna rattle around.. |

Yep, it's certainly coming from inside the gauge, which is evident for the fact that it is quite loud and pronounced only between a specific RPM range. Anyway, I've been contacted by an awesome member out here in Geelong, and he may have an OEM Magnolia gauge for me! Happy days. If / when I get it, I'll certainly be adventuring into open up the old one and see if I can fix it anyway. These projects are much less dangerous when you've got a spare in hand. I'll keep you all posted. |
