Post subject:  Clicking/ Clunking noise when driving
I havent driven my roundnose for a few months, but on its last outing it had developed a clicking noise from l think is the front left of the car. I think it sounds like a worn cv joint, but are the any other suggestions what it could be. If l am to replace both cv joints is there anything else worthwhile overhauling/ replacing whilst im under the car. The noise developed taking a right turn at moderate speed but then continued all the way home. I got the car on jacks last night and rotated both front wheels but l couldnt hear anything unusual? Any Suggestions..... The motor is a 1275 from a S. Thanks.

CV's usually click only on turning, and if they're very worn, will click when going straight too. Looks like yours must have been pretty severely damaged in one go.

So to rule out anything else, the clicking is proportional to the car speed (not engine speed) and it still occurs with the clutch in. Get somebody to stand next to the car while driving so you can be sure of which side it is.

You'll need to crack at lease one ball joint to get the old cv out, so you can look at the ball joints. New ones are rubbish, so don't go replacing them just for the sake of replacing them, just check if they're worn. Yes, new ones are cheap, but the old ones are better. Apart from that, just check your discs and pads, there's not much that needs removing to get to a cv joint.

just seems weird to me that everything is fine and all of a sudden ive got what sounds like a faulty cv joint even when driving straight! Is there any bearings that can let go and make a similar noise?

Sure is. You can get under there with the car up on stands and check the universals. I'm not sure what type you have, but they can come loose. While you're there take a look at the steering linkages and suspension. Give everything a good rattle in and out. Look at you engine mounts as well. Give the engine a rock, but don't expect there to be any rock.

Is it when you roll on or off the throttle? Or at any time in a straight line? Does it go quiet or otherwise under acceleration?

Mick it happened about 2km from home on a sweeping right hand bend, then the noise was persistant until l got home, the noise was constant with and without throttle, l havent driven the car since :( , when l get home tonight l will have a look at what you have suggested.
