I've just changed to new disc pads. The old ones where fitted with thin metal shims, they may have originally been bonded to the pads I'm not sure ( one seemed stuck) and one has always been missing.

Are these necessary? I assume they are anti squeal but they don't seem to act as any kind of slight spring as I would expect.

If they are worth fitting where do I get them for standard 7.5 discs.

Cheers

They stop your pads from squealing, which doesn't seem to be such a problem anymore. I go without, but I have a set of four here in case I need them. I haven't in a dozen years however.

When you say sqealing I assume you mean when the brakes are applied. The only problem I ever had was sometimes a faint squeak - squeak - squeak - squeak - squeak - squeak - as you drove with the brakes off which would disappear if you lightly touched the brakes.

Hopefully not a problem with the new pads.

Many pads sold now have a coating on the back to prevent squealing.
If the pads don't come with shims (usual now) they should not need them.
