Post subject:  Mk I Cooper S info wanted

I recently got a Mk I Cooper S shell and I just want to get some info and date for it. The Body/Car number is 4605, the Type is YKG2S2 which I know is mk I 'S'. So who can tell me what year/month it is :?:
Next has anyone got pictures of correct sills (mainly the drains/vents) and the correct floor pans. Also the front apron, should it have the cut out corners for the brake cooling?

Finally dose anyone have a picture of the colour combo "1/clay beige/3"?

Mate for $100 you got a bargain.
The front apron will have cut outs and not a full skirt.

October 1968, give or take a month.

It doesn't list a second colour so it's montone (i.e. roof same colour as body).
Check the 1967 colour card here - viewtopic.php?f=25&t=66469

I can tell you the original engine number for that car if that's of interest.

Body or Car no is 4605. The car no is the one on the id plate and repeated on the firewall.

If Car no. 4605 I'd agree approx Oct 1968 but somone might be able to narrow it more. It's only around 200 cars earlier than mine and it should be after they redid the wipers to sweep to the right.

This Mini Matic is Clay Beige (original duco too!!) and also late 68. (note wipers). This particular car has red upholstery but there might have been other interior colours that went with that colour.

Phill - I assumed he meant car number because he had already quoted the colour from the ID plate.

For what it is worth, I bought a brand new Mk1 Cooper S in 1969, I have just had a look at the original registration papers which I still have and it has the Chassis Number listed as YKG2S2/4724, which is 119 cars later than the one you described above. I am not sure when they refer to the Chassis Number on the registration papers as to what number they were refering to, I assume the one on the ID plate. It took a few weeks to arrive after I ordered it and it arrived at the dealer on the 14th of March 1969. I then had to wait another few days for the dealer to fit the Mk2 Cooper S flares as the Victorian Motor Registration Office refused to register it unless they were fitted.

Not sure how long cars sat around for back then, but mine was ordered and took several weeks to arrive.

Tell me what you know but the ID plate says 9f/Sa/Y 49700 but it's just a shell.

phillb Thanks for the interior info aswell, is there a reliable list to look at for Cooper's interior trim styles and years of production?
I want to make a list of the things the car should have so one day I can put it together as a original car.

It is amazing how these engine numbers/chassis numbers work, the Chassis number on my S that I listed above is 119 cars later than the shell we are talking about, but the engine number on the 'S' I bought new is 1400 engines earlier 9F/SA/Y/48300. Must have been a bit of an odd system they had back then.

Who knows maybe that engine had an issue they had to recify, or it just sat at the back of the stockpile. There really was no attempt to keep them in order, and no real reason to I guess. I've seen a few old factory photos and you can see the unpacked motors just sitting on the floor in the unit plant ready to hoist to the engine assembly line.

These engines were fully imported so you can imagine the order would be mixed when loaded in UK, then mixed again when unpacked, then they assembled ancillaries and resprayed them the Aussie green, then they got hot tested.

My Car is 200 later than Kennominis and my engine no is around 270 later from so that lines up pretty well.

Interior pattern would be the later one with the pleats going over the edge of the seat.

I guess that exterior colour could have had any of the interior colours, Black, Red, Green, & Blue would all match OK I think. Unless there are any scraps of carpet etc left it would be hard to tell what it had.

Would be this pattern

Interesting and it's only 91 cars before mine!

Having a look at it this arvo the top and bottom dash rails have black smooth vinyl on them so I'd assume the interior was black. I also noticed some spots of yellow on the inner firewall, it looks to be under the contact glue for the interior.
(A) Is there ment to be contact glue under the flooring?
(B) Would that yellow be a sort of primer from factory? or is there anyway the yellow could be factory related? did the paint bits of the car that wouldn't be seen any colour the had in the gun at the time?
