Does anyone carry a kayak on their mini?

I kayak with my young lad quite a bit on weekends, he just sits on the yak with me and we paddle around, but that kayak is huge (14 foot) and I transport is on the top of my territory.

during the week however I drive the mini to work and was thinking about getting a smaller yak to use after work once a week since I work near a lake...

was thinking about getting some gutter mount roof bars from super cheap and an 8 foot yak.... anyone see any problems with putting the bars/yak on the mini.... it only weighs about 20 kilos.

I think the biggest problem is it won't look as cool as a surf board.
:D

From memory, minis are fine for upto 50kg with the right roof bars, so as long as the kayak is correctly and securely mounted you should be fine.

I had one of those kayaks and carried it on my mini a few times.
Wasn't to bad a fit and not to heavy for the roof racks.
But where i went was salt water and putting the kayak back on the mini dripping salt water wasn't a good idea...
Sold the kayak and roof racks and bought mags!

sounds like I should be good to go then if you've done it without any issues...

and I already have mags, so i guess I don't have an excuse.... now just need to convince the missus... do you think she'll notice a big red kayak on the roof when i get home tonight?

no issues at all carrying a kayak, except for all of the extra attention you'll get when people say how cool it looks... make sure you put up some pictures ;)

a set of cheap roof bars and gutter mounts will do it easy.

I used to carry a little dingy around on roof racks. It was fine, but people used to joke about turning the whole lot upside down when it rained heavily.

I used to carry a racing kayak around on the roof of a Civic that was not much bigger than a Mini. It overhung front and back and needed a red flag on the rudder :)

Gee I really needed to dig for this one, but found it for you, an internet-friend over in NC, USA.

I know someone who kayaked in the last 3 Olympics (missed 2000 by one spot but got to help set up and test the course in Penrith). He use to carry his craft (plural) on a Mini van all over the country to train and compete.

Might pay you to check this out too. It is the rear overhang limits for cars and trucks in Victoria. You cant put massively long things on top of short things and expect to get away with it. Don't want to spoil the fun but I don't want to see a mini driver get booked either. Cheers.

Thanks flute.
The overhang is why im looking at getting an 8 foot kayak instead of trying to fit the 13 footer on there
