Post subject: | Engine Identification - Please |
I've been advertising on Gumtree to buy a 1275 engine for my mini and have recently been sent some photos of an engine on offer (I would include the photos but don't know how to add them on here! Advise please?). Can anyone give me any details on the engine? The number as far as I can read is: 12H902******62 (the *'s are the numbers I can't read!). The seller has told me it's from a Moke and was running in a 61 850 Mini before he removed it. Thank you in advance for any information ![]() |

12H902 was used in the 1978 1275LS and possibly also the Moke from the same year as well. |

http://en.wikipedia.org/ wrote: To end Mini production in Australia, a limited edition runout model was produced − the 1275LS. Fitted with a pollution control 1,275 cc engine sourced from Europe, the LS had a single 1.5-inch (38 mm) carburettor and 8.4-inch (210 mm) disc brakes. Production of this model commenced in July 1978 and concluded in October 1978 with an approximate total of 810 vehicles produced.

minimadmarty the 1275 motors are all good, but that doesn't mean they aren't put together poorly, worn out, bored out to the end of its working life without sleeves, etc. i take it , you were after a whole Long/short motor that was going and not needing an expensive (relatively) rebuild straight away. if you can get all the details from seller about the last build on it, if not yhen see it working in the car, otherwise it could be a lottery..... worth while getting a mini mad mechanical type to look with you.. best of luck |

Hi FNQ, I'm after a 1275 to rebuild myself (never done one before although I have rebuilt Ducati engines). It's more a project of learning, if I get it right I'll have a good spare motor for my Mini. If I stuff it up, I dig a big hole in the garden and pretend it never happened (as I did with my first wife! Kidding!!). The guy selling is asking $600 so I can't really go wrong! (I hope!). |

Cheers again Morris 1100, Does anyone know how the pollution control worked? Does it restrict horsepower in any way? |

Minimadmarty wrote: Cheers again Morris 1100, Does anyone know how the pollution control worked? Does it restrict horsepower in any way? It used a few HP to drive an air pump which injected air into the exhaust ports of the head. This helped burn unburned fuel, also diluted the exhaust plume with air. These days, most cars have ditched the pump etc, parts to fix are NLA and ADR27A was all intended for leaded fuel, which we no longer have.. Nobody checks pollution figures here on old cars anyway, it's not like in the UK. |

Closed cirucuit breathing was a form of pollution control (crank case breather back into the manifold) I believe the heads were different too, I recall an air port in the exhaust to reduce the harmful by products (carbon monoxide) |

MM Marty if all is turning over in the engine you should have a ball building one, and so long as internals are fine that is a good deal. |
