Post subject: | Side mouldings - how to mould it to fenders? |
I've pulled off my old chrome moulding and I'm ready to put the new ones back on... but it's obviously a bit hard to form. Do I just start from one side (rivet it down?) and then heat gun it slowly across until it moulds to the right shape? Or is there another method for this? If the heat gun is the right way, would I mould it then rivet as I go, or make it all fit, then rivet it at the end? Also with rivets, is there a craftsmanship trick to it (like every x cm apart) or should I just use the original holes and drill from underneath? |

Yes, drill from underneath, I use a hair dryer, nice and easy, and when you rivet make sure they sure it's a short grip type and pull back as you squash them so they don't touch the mould. You don't need too many, just near the curve, one at each end and one in the middle for good measure if you like. Nice and steady ![]() Thanks Ian |

Cheers for the links Ryan - I did do a google search for aus mini chrome fenders but it came up empty. Cheers Ian - May look into stealing a hairdryer! Heat gun may be overkill here |

a good tip for searching google is to type "site:ausmini.com" followed by the topic. eg: site:ausmini.com chrome side trim |

Don't heat them too much as they distort and turn into a mess. I have found a bucket of hot water worked ok in the past but the latest plastic strip doesn't seem as good as the old stuff ![]() |

I laid mine out on the concrete drive on Saturday when it was about 37 degrees hoping to make them easier to uncurl. It worked a little but not as well as I had hoped. Having it stiff did make it hold on well after fitting though. I ended up not having to use rivets. |
