Hi all, I will start by saying that I had a thread on this about a year ago, but I can't find it now even searching using google. Anyway, about a year ago I replaced the nylon bush on the end of the gear stick as well as the other two bushes in the gear stick assembly. I also cleaned it all out and replaced the grease. The noise went away and I was very happy. Now the noise is back. I'm guessing the grease has been pushed out of the way and the rattle has returned. What can people suggest to try next. It really bugs me. Ryan |

The rattle can come from the rod passing through the remote housing, as it runs in the aluminium, and does not have any lubrication. I did have a trick once told to me on this forum, I've found the linky here: viewtopic.php?p=301084 It involved a Morris Minor steering Trunnion ( rubber thingy) you inserted to keep tension in the gearstick end of the remote. It actually worked a treat on an otherwise noisy as hell gearstick. But anyway, there may be more appropriate things to do first before going down that path in the link above. |

Sounds like it could be the ticket mick. Unfortunately the part you linked to is no longer available. They recommend this one instead. Does it look the same? ![]() Does it go on the stick or on the shaft that runs through the remote housing? Ryan |

From memory, it was a long time ago on my car that went to Qld (smelly), it was fitted on the gearstick spigot between the bottom cup and the upper retaining gubbins. |

Had a similar issue. I tried replacing the nylon bush, fitting a quick shift and greasing everything to no avail. Only when I went to replace the rear mount did I find that one of the bolts holding the bracket to the body was loose. Simple fix but drove me crazy until then. |

Good tip, I will check that before doing anything. |

These are the things I would Check 1) The selector linkages at the male and female toggles are they loose 2) the bushes in the diff housing that the selector rod fits through 3) At the bottom of the diff housing is a bell crank Make sure that You have rubber Or fibre washers both sides of the bell Crank 4) depending on the model You have there may be one or two grease nipples in the remote make sure both are greased 5) The nylon bush or C washer at the top is in good order 6) the nylon bush fitted to the bottom of the gear stick is in good order 7) check that there is a spring fitted beneath the nylon bush that is fitted inside the remote and the bottom of gearstick fits into. Is in fact there I have found This spring is very often Missing *************************** Just a point of interest, the early Mini Cooper Remote control was different in a few areas to most remotes You see to day |

Thanks John, 1,2 and 3 should all be ok as they were replaced recently. I will check 4. 5. Last time I spoke to you, you gave me some second hand nylon bush/C washers as you said they were no longer available. Is this still the case? 6. The nylon bush fitted to the bottom was changed last year (provided by you of course). 7. I can't for the life of me remember if there was a spring. But I do remember when putting it all back together it needed to be squashed down to get the bolts started. |

I am sorry Ryan If I said the Nylon c Washers were NLA I should Have said I do not have any at present, Because they are avail And I do have stock of them Now My sincere apologies If I mislead You I may have supplied You with one of the bushes for the bottom that do not need a spring, It may be worth checking that this bush is not worn as I had this made from a material that I was advised to Use If it is worn a lot may be the advise I got was not Correct Please Keep me informed Regards John |

Usual cause of rattle on a remote shift I find is not the bottom nylon bush, it's the split top one under the spring. Once it wears and contacts the housing, there is no tension on the ball, so it rattles. Kc and Mini King + others carry them, but if out of stock it's not hard to turn one up out of nylon or delrin. The bottom inner corner is square (no chamfer) when new. [edit] This is c washer 5 above in John's post. I typed this hours ago but my cable went down, so I'm late reposting it. |

Hi all My Daughter has an 850 with an 1100 engine with Remote Shift. The noise she has seems to come from the footwell down at the bottom of the Fire Wall. If you push the gear lever forward at speed the noise almost disappears. Is this in the linkage mechanism mentioned by John in points 1 to 4. How difficult is this to get to. Phil |
