It was intermittent and annoying but I couldn't work out why they wouldn't cancel on one side... Sometimes. Yesterday. I finally saw what the problem was.

The little red wire that runs out to the bulb at the end of the stalk was just touching the release trigger that centres the mechanism. The whole design relies totally on the triggers for both sides and the spring that pulls on them is wap. The wire only needs to just touch the trigger to stop it activating and the self cancelling is lost.

I used a baby pair of long nosed pliers to carefully pull the wire back through the hole enough to clear the triggers and then bent the wire over to stop it returning. I also gave it a little kink at the soldered end to make sure.

The indicators cancel properly now and the problem shouldn't come back.

Typically, soldered wire joints fail at the solder/wire junction....just remember that if you have a future problem in the same area :D
