So I just had my 1969 K in to get checked for roadworthy.
The list came back including some items I wondered whether others had been pulled up for.

Indicators don't cancel - I was of the opinion that there are no stalks for minis that cancel?
No rear seatbelts - Must have if there is a rear seat, I don't believe my 69 ever came with them? No mounts I can see.
Wouldn't allow the standard tilt forward seats, must be secured he reckons.
( this one is not hard I just thought that standard seats would pass fine)
Unsecured hard brake lines in engine bay, must be secured to the firewall somehow - As far as I knew my master cylinder lines were as is from the factory.
No spare tyre - Not much of an issue but I always thought you needed to run a passable spare or no spare at all.

Thoughts?

indicators do cancel check little knob on steering column might be out of place or missing
seat are original should be ok
spare if there should be roadworthy or not there
the rest not sure??? :)

It really makes me wonder, because he said nothing about things like reversing lights.
Surely if he has no clue about the rules then they would be a glaring error on the car.

Personally, I would go back to the same place with answers to what's been identified. Taking a firm and knowledgeable, but pleasant approach could get a suitable response.

As mentioned already the blinker stalk should cancel automatically. This is prone to breakage in the original design.

It says "front seat belts". It also shows a picture of the engine bay and the brake lines from the master cylinders.

The requirement to secure hinged front seats came in from 1st January 1971 with ADR 3. The car's ADR compliance plate will show the build date and ADR requirement (see Section 3.2.3 here - http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/ ... pdf/03.pdf )

Same date for rear seat belts, as per ADR 4 - http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/ ... pdf/04.pdf

What is the rules about running without a spare? Probably different from state to state, but there are a heap of new cars these days that dont have them. I would assume u need to have a tyre repair kit onboard.

In QLD if you have a spare it must be roadworthy and secured, or simply don't carry one (who needs that extra weight anyway :roll: ). As for new cars, I'm not to sure.

It has been a long time since the rules were introduced, and its easier to take the safe line. Most mechanics these days were born after the incoming 1971 ADRs. Second pass is free, and he might respond to some gentle prods.

Sometimes knowledge is more important than tact... Having had a dust up with a local garage over the specification (and hence acceptability) of a first gen Corolla it was very satisfying to point out (at the local police station) that the spec said garage was quoting belonged to a car some 5 models newer than mine. The boys in blue agreed my refusal to pay was reasonable...

The second time involved showing the supervisor at the local motor registry that the page missing from his manual showed at the bonnet scoop on my Mini was well within the (official) specification...

Just make sure you have the paperwork first....

My indicators cancel... sometimes (less than 50% of the time)... weather or not its a roadworthy item I'm not sure, but if it is, the place that did mine 2 months ago obviously didn't know...

Rear Seatbelts - There is a document on the vicroads website which should clear this up... lists the exact requirements for each ADR revision, but in short, if the car didn't come with them, they shouldn't be needed.

Factory Seats are fine, maybe they "rock" too much, sometimes the "latch" can bend and allow movement, but as with the seat belts, if they are the original seats, they should pass. I believe the only time seats fail is if they are damaged in such a way that would interfere with the operation of the vehicle or interrupt the drivers concentration

factory brake lines should pass no issue... thats all there is to say

spare tyre reqs are on the Vicroads website I believe, but the short of it is, its only a roadworthy item if its present, and there is no requirement in the roadworthy to carry a spare.... so take it out and its a pass.


Either they are having a lend of you, or they are just making it up as they go.

Most mechanics are not familiar with older cars or minis as I found out recently when my Cooper S was knocked back for front wheels protruding. I have since checked a standard Cooper S with steel wheels which are sticking out further than my ROH alloys...?
I would try another garage, as I did. Look for someone who is a bit more of a car enthusiast. :)

I actually found a rule for vic regoed cars, any car made after 1965 have to have seat belts fitted reguardless of the pre jan 69 adr rules , but not sure if this includes rear belts thou....

Actually in qld the rwc act states " the spare tyre is not part of the rwc inspection" so the inspector isnt required to check it , and even if it is bald its still legal aslong as it stays in the boot lol
