How hard are these to replace? What steps need to be followed?

You need to remove the inner door catch mechanism and then thread the coil spring over the square steel axis which goes to the outer handle. The spring secures on its outer end to one of the three securing screws for the outer handle.

I can't remember however if you need to remove the inner door handle mechanism before putting the clock spring on? Any one else remember if you do?

Depends what you are actually doing. The original spring is inside the door latch mechanism - which means drilling out rivets to open it up ...and then finding something original looking to put it all back together....

The previous post is referring to the after market snail spring that fits on the outside (of the latch) and assists the original spring to hold the door handle horizontal.

If this is what you have, just remember to wind it around a few times to tension it before fixing the outer end....

Cheers, Ian

PS They work really well....

Thanks guys. Ian, you are right. It's the aftermarket one that I'm using.

Is it a straight forward job?

The snail spring is a stock part, not aftermarket.
p/no is HYA3512, it is shown in the Mini King book p 262, and listed in PUB1038 (Mini-K factory parts book).

Are You of the opinion that the snail spring was never fitted at the factory, only after market ?

Not a all. Just that the large spring is hard to get to to repair - maybe not for you pros...

For us amateurs though....the much finer aftermarket helper spring takes up the slack in the main spring and is invisible once installed....

Mate,
How many people have to point this out?
The spring you are referring to is a factory part fitted to all Australian doors with wind up windows and pull down handles.
It is not aftermarket!
There is enough missinformation posted here to confuse young players, why add to it?

Hey Ryan

I remember you being there one day a while back up at the Mini King shop when I asked a similar question abaout my door handle snail spring - sorry, but forget the dude's name who talked me through the procedure, but anyways I remember saying bugger that, sounds out of my mechanical league!

anyways, if you do manage to give it a go, I would like to help / assist / observe so as I could have a go to fix mine too one day. Let us know if and when you're up for it
