Just wondering if there is an easy visual way to check whether a gearbox is a 3 or 4 synchro remote type.

Is there a difference to the cases or just the gears within?

Cases are different. Check the number cast on the front near the oil filter.
22G1128 is 4 synchro remote, as is 22G846. All other remote boxes were 3 synchro.

Easy way to tell the difference
On the sump plug end , if the case is flat , it is a 3 syncro
if there is a slight rounded hump , its a 4 syncro
