Post subject:  Alternator Wiring Issue

I brought myself a 70 Amp alternator today :D it's a Chinese brand Unipoint the connectors where different to my spade type (not an issue). I've connected the fat brown battery wire to the terminal labeled 'B+' the thinner black/yellow wire to the terminal labelled 'W' and the last black/brown wire to the remaining terminal that wasn't labelled.

The problem: all works well except the red Alt warning light on the dash is staying on! What have I done wrong?

The bottom left wire goes to terminal labelled 'B+' (brown wire)
The low right wire (black/yellow) gores to terminal labelled 'W'
The top left terminal wasn't labelled! (Black/brown wire)

The W terminal is an output when charging so swap the wire to the D+ which is the warning light, give that a try. Otherwise use a test light, put the clip to the B+ and the probe on the other terminals one at time, one will light up with engine off and other will light up engine running, the W will have power when alternator is charging only.

No luck! There isn't a 'D+' marked anywhere on the alternator!

Did you try the test light? When doing the test light disconnect all wiring but the b+. Otherwise put the black yellow to the other terminal as where it's connected now isn't right.

I have the thick brown wire on the B+ terminal then with the test wire both the 'W' terminal and the unmarked one light up! As does anything I touch with the other end of the test wire!

So now put it on one at a time and start the car but use the test light as if it's the dash warning light, so the one that lights up with engine off then goes off when engine running is the warning light. Forget about the w terminal. Keep the test light connected when testing.

Ok, what I've done that seems to work! Both the brown and brown/blue wire on on the B+ terminal as both go to the same terminal on the starter solenoid. The black/yellow wire is now on the unmarked terminal. The dash warning light is on prior to starting and goes off once started!

The 'W' terminal has nothing connected to it.

Does that sound ok???

Easy marty. Put the black lead on the chassis. Red lead on the b+ output on the alternator. Set multimeter to 12v dc or like most nultimeters 20v dc start engine and read if display is around 13.8v. If it is alternator working.
