Hi,

My ignition light has been constantly on while driving and the battery finally run out of charge, I assume that the alternator has gone, but while looking at the parts I’m not sure if it is and Alternator or Generator?
:?
Which one do I need?

Could be a voltage reg problem.

That is a generator

Now is the perfect time to think about upgrading to an alternator!

Cheers

That's a generator , your battery will most likely be wired in with positive earth (unless the voltage regulator has had it's polarity changed ) so will need some modifications if you intend to fit an alternator . Personal preference and the amount of accesories will decide what you do , big stereo would be better with an alternator but I like generators in my mini's for looks and simplicity .

That, as above is a Generator. You may just need to get it reconditioned.
Is your car neg- or pos+ earth?

Look at the battery , which terminal (will be marked with a + or - on the battery) goes to the short cable attached to the body and which one goes to the long cable that runs through the floor and up to the engine bay ?

Its Neg - Earth, will an alternator bolt straight in? Or best to stay with the generator?

Alternator will bolt in if you change the rear bracket.
You will need to do some rewiring around the old voltage regulator area.
A modern alternator has a regulator inbuilt.

Nothing wrong with generators though, usually it's just worn brushes, or dirty points in the regulator.

if your intending to put a stereo in make sure you get a 65 amp alternator.
as the originals were only designed for a radio with 1 speaker and not much else. the 65 amp will leave room for halogen lights, eletronic dizzy etc.

Convertible Mini on here sells them.

you will need to change the regulator around a bit
This link has the instructions on what you have to rewire

sorry to reopen an old thread but sports is there any way of knowing if the polarity has been changed and is/was this a common thing to do (change the polarity of the regulator)

look at the battery, what is connected to the body. that will tell you what polarity it is.

Even a standard Clubby 16ACR alternator puts out 34A, this is 12A more than that generator ever did.
I have halogens, electronic dizzy, stereo, etc. No problemo with stock 16ACR alternator.
I reckon a decent size battery (500CCA+) is more important than a BIG alternator, unless your stereo consumes KW- in which case you want both.
