Hey guys,

I've had my cooper s for about a year and have found and fixed some problems so that's all good now.

Anyway the questions I have are...

1. My Speedo doesn't work.
I tried to fix it myself when I had the carbys off (there is a plate between the back of the cluster and the engine bay and the speedo cable was bent underneath the plate, so I drilled a new hole straight behind the cluster and fed cable through)
It did help slightly but still wont exceed 30 miles no matter how fast I go.

So my question is would it be a problem with the cable or the actual speedo itself?

2. Iv'e had the carbys refurbished form Fabre at lakemba, happy with the result. Iv'e also had the car tuned by Greg at Mini Classic
She runs great very responsive but really runs rich and smells fuely.

Is that normal?

3.Before I bought the car she was only driven once a year for rego and the tyres are only about 3 years old but they squeal just going slow around a roundabout.

I was thinking of getting road slicks for her would it be worthwhile? I only drive her on weekends and think I think the extra grip would help but not just that it will stop squealing.

Thanks guys

Corey

What tells you it is running rich? The fuel smell is very common, but as I have recently learnt it can be fixed very easily. You need to make sure that your breathers are plumbed back into the manifold through a pcv valve. This ensures that all fumes from the engine are burnt off. You also need to check that the fuel tank breathers are actually making it all the way out of the boot. These run from the top of the tanks and down through the floor.

I think he was meaning he drilled a hole in the plate that had been added behind the speedo.

Regarding the speedo I would start by checking the cable.

*undo from back of speedo

*check the inner cable cannot turn or slip, i.e. that it is engaging down at the gearbox end

*withdraw the cable inner from the outer

*hold the inner by both ends so it forms a teardrop shape with the ends about 10cm apart and twist. If the inner is OK it should turn without jumping, if it jumps or kinks it prob needs replacing. Check general condition of the inner.

*If it's OK grease with molly grease but wipe away the grease from the top 20cm to prevent grease entering the speedo.

*Check the route of the outer that it takes no sharp bends before refitting too the speedo. Try it without the plate to begin with.

Another experiment would be to disconnect the cable at the gearbox and carefully run the speedo cable with a drill to check the speedo does actually work. May need to go in reverse can't remember) But the gearbox end is notoriusly hard to reach unless you are a contortionist with tiny hands.
