Anyone have a trick to putting these in? I don't have a special tool, and I don't have the required tube to stick it in with. Any clues, or do I go visit bunning and make something up?

Cheers

Aaron

put some tape over all the sharp bits so you don't slice them as you put it in, then when everything is buttoned up, unwind the tape. other than that, it ahs been a looooooooong time since i did one.

Nah the outer seal is all easy you just pop it into the hole without bending or cracking the seal. easy. The hard part is getting the inner lip to sit properly on the primary gear. Because if it doesn't it just leaks oil. I have heard of using some thin plastic or cardboard and rotating it until the seal sits correctly, but i am usre if this works. My first attempt failed, so i have bought 2 more. If i can't get it right i will be very unhappy.

Cheers

Aaron

i just don't remember it being that difficult? its a v-lip seal with a spring yeah? as long as you are not brutal with it, the spring should seat the lip properly on the running surface.

It is in and on now. The tricky bit is the spring behind. If your not careful it will pop off and hence not seal the lip. How i did it. I placed the primary gear thrust washer onto the crank and applied a little oil to hold it in place. Then once i had the primary gear seal seated into the clutch housing i placed the primary gear into it and then made sure the lip was correct and not folded over. Doing this whilst havng the housing off the engine allowed me to make sure it was correct on the back side and that the spring was in place . Happy! I then assembled it all on the shaft making sure not to dislodge the thrust washer. You know when you have as you can't get the primary gear on the shaft far enough to get the circlip and washer into place. Do it all up and bob's my uncle! Happiness is a Built motor. Well almost. Just have to put the clutch in and a head on. Then it looks like a motor. I will then put on some ancillaries and start it on the floor. Best to know if you have made a mistake before putting it into the enigne bay..... I have lernt that lesson.
JAM if Doc put your seal in, you should be right, i am sure he's done a few in his time. :D
Mickmini, i asked the question as i had a seal go awry before, wasn't confident, but now that i have the thing sitting in right and not all busted up. all will be well. :?

Cheers

Aaron

I have a `special service tool' for sliding the seal over the splines. Basically it's a piece of alloy machined all over, so it fits over the splines right up to the seal running surface on the gear. It's tapered at the end to start the seal on.
One day, I'll make an outer sleeve to push the seal in using the flywheel bolt..

Hey doc do you know how much mr russel charges to balance and machine the flywheel assembly. I guess i need to get that done, and as he is less than 5 mins away it would be handy

Cheers

Not sure what he charges to M/C a flywheel, then balance it. Probably ~$100-150 total (guess). Doesn't take long to do. 8)

I think a flywheel balance alone was $50.

<edit> when you do it, take him the backplate, straps and diaphragm too.. he'll balance the assembly a bit at a time.
