I've replaced my inner cable with a 1.1mm diameter push bike shifter cable, gave it a bit of a grease up but I'm still finding the pedal notchy and catchy. It was smooth before but the inner was fraying at the end so decided to replace it. I've recently rebuilt both 1 1/4 SU's and replaced all 3 return springs and accel cable mount that attaches to the manifold. Almost thinking the new springs were to stiff? They came supplied with he new heat shield I bought recently. I can see the cable is pulling straight and true. The carbs are nice and smooth when operated with no cable connected. The outer is probably 30years old but the inner feels smooth when it's in there. WTF is going on. Was thinking of buying one of these cables with a nylon lined outer? http://minisport.com.au/prod106.htm But it does say its 5" longer? |

The cable isn't rubbing on the accell cable mount ferrule at the carby end or at the bulkhead?? I had one that was bent at the wrong angle and did this. It could be the cable is hanging up on the old wound metal of the old outer liner once its got some load on it (the springs). The new liners are teflon lined, in particular with the good quality bicycle brake cables. In fact they're the only ones I'll use because they're great quality as well as stainless steel. The new outer liners will fit in the standard mini brass adaptor at the firewall end. Gearchange cables are a smaller gauge, so avoid these. |

Ok I'll look at a new outer. I initially had a 1.5mm stainless brake cable inner but then changed down to a 1.1mm shifter cable but no real difference. |

Hi Hanra As Mick has said , the good quality bike cables work a treat, teflon plus stainless. Have you tried it with only one or two springs to test your theory, the other thing is the fitting behind the pedal, sometimes they sort of wobble if there was slack in the system at some point. |

The fitting on the pedal is all good. Yep, Ive fitted just 2 springs, is still notchy but not as obvious. Weird as it has been fine for the past 11years, Ive replaced the inner as it looked a bit ordinary and now Im stuck with this problem.... The new standard replacements dont seem to mention if they are teflon lined inside? Only the upgraded one does....? |

The bike shop guys will know. Or if you take the metal ferrule off the end (you will need to cut the bike one to length) you will see the liner. |

Is it possibly something like the old outer has worn a groove in it and you are now using a different size cable so it's not matched to the groove? Just a weird theory. |

If you do to for a bike cable get a brake cable. Shifter cables are slightly thinner on bicycles. |

Yep 1.5mm for brake and 1.1mm for shifter cables. Yeah I think the outer is U/S so I'll just buy an entirely new Mini cable. Thinking this one might be worth the little bit extra over a standard cable? http://minisport.com.au/prod106.htm |

Replacing an inner and not the outer would be a bit of a false economy. Every original cable that has ever given me grief has been binned and replaced with new bicycle brake cable bought off the roll to exact length. Local bike shop throws in a handfull of the crimp ends for good measure. Once they know what it's being used for they go out of their way to help. |

Great advice Mick, Those Teflon Bike cables are great. I have been using them since my days of speedway racing. Cheaper and better than Mini Accelerator cables we get today. I always keep a spare one in each car too in case someone breaks one when we are on group runs. |
