Whilst researching the use of Mini Cooper S's in NSW Police I came across the following vision held in the National Film and Sound Archive. It's a 40 second film with no sound that was broadcast on NBN TV News on 22nd August 1968 with the caption: Traffic - With the start of the school holidays extra police patrols took to the roads in the north today. Two extra Mini Cooper S patrol vehicles have been added to the force at Newcastle. It's the only vision of ever seen of the inside of a NSW Police Cooper S showing the position of the calibrated speedo, amongst other things. Note: This is an embedded video that plays in the post window instead of just showing a url link to YouTube that causes a new window to open. You'll see the YouTube button under the Bold button above the message compilation window. Very interesting. Station cars, local patrol or STP highway patrol cars? I don't think STP because all but one have the police signage on the doors. The one without might be STP. Did you notice one of them has a blue light on the roof. Just goes to show there must have been a significant amount of non-uniformity to them. Cheers, Watto. |

If you have a close look only the Cooper 'S's are unmarked, the others are Deluxes (no right hand tank). When the policeman walks out he hops into a marked Deluxe, but then he drives off in an unmarked Cooper S. Interesting to see there are no weather shield or wire shade on the Cooper S and the rear view mirror is bolted on. The car with the wire shade and driving lights is a deluxe. |

I got booked by an unmarked beige S back in 1969, probably came from Newcastle as he tailed me from Raymond Terrace. All the HWP Ss were unmarked. Sneaky buggers.... ![]() |

LOL Well picked. He walks around to the marked De Luxe then the next shot shows him getting into the unmarked S. Artistic license. Or poor editing. OK.....take 27....this time Sarge, get in the right car! |

Driving lights on the deluxe but not on the cooper s. Must have the lowered seat brackets as he is driving with his hat on. Great footage. |
