someone will correct me, but HB torana was a Vauxhall sourced car. Vauxhall would probably have bought their steering rack bits from the same rack manufacturer BMC used when they were putting the mini together (or vice versa) so they ended up with the same threads, and the same size taper suited for what they wanted without retooling costs...

Yes the HB Torry shared a lot of Vauxhall Viva parts. My first car was 2 x 1964 Vauxhall Vivas for $150.
They had a transverse front leaf suspension which changed to coil spring in 65/66.

Getting back onto the subject
They probably looked at what was available in the market place and instead of making their own rod ends used ones already in production.

A bit of a coincidence, I just fitted some last week. HB torana ones are same threads etc but bit that screws on tie rod is about 6-8mm longer on Torana ones, don't know why. I think the Vauxhall Viva model was HB too.

The first ones were HB's. Here's a Brabam pack one.

Actually that extra length would come in handy if you had negative camber on the front, wouldn't it?

I think Triumph (Spitfire?) ones fit a Mini too and are a bit longer. Maybe same as the Torry/Viva ones.

Karcraft sells longer ones too, it's not as though they are hard to find if you need some. Kc's p/no is GSJ734#.

I don't really know, but MiniSpares sells longer ones:http://minispares.com/product/Classic/Suspension/Front/Hydro/C-AJJ1572.aspx?190202&ReturnUrl=/search/classic/negative%20camber.aspx|Back%20to%20search
