Post subject:  Wheel Bearing Gone?

Hey Guys,

When I was on my home tonight I noticed that when i turned left the and as I took off from stopped drivers side wheel would make a loud noise.. it was like

shuc...shuc..shuc.shucshucshuc until it sort of went away when i was going normal speed.

steering was fine, and brakes worked fine, gear changes seemed fine....
so I figure it must be either the wheel bearing, or the drive shaft?

Any guess as the which of these it is? or something else? I'd like to try to figure out what it is before I either try to fix it with my father-in-law, or get it fixed by a shop.

Thanks.

If you have rubber universal joints on the gearbox, check that they are not worn or missing u-bolts.

Lift the wheel of the ground and check for any slop in the wheel bearing by wiggling the wheel while it is still attached to the hub.

Also take a good close look at the CV nut at the center of the brake and see it isn't coming loose.

As well as your wheel bearing and what was said above, the CV eventually wears and on cornering will allow the wheel drive flange to creep around on the splines within. If this goes on for too long, no amount of tightening the nut will remove the noise as the splines will wear permanently.

Sometimes the noise can be caused by the movement (whatever is causing it) causing the rake drums to touch the backplate as well.

i was going to say check you haven't picked up a stone/debris in left tyre and is now flung off. i had a retread once ( non mini) , start flinging itself off once and stopped, started, got out a few times until finally the flap showed itself...

The problem is almost certainly related to the right front hub and if not a simple matter of the torque on the CV having been released by a shock (pot hole, bump etc.), the drive flange has likely failed.

If when jacked up the wheel does not wobble (indicating bearings), pull the cotter pin in the CV and see what torque is on that nut...I'm guessing little to none. The reason I say so is that a bearing problem will persist going straight or around a corner.

If there has been no or less noise when you turn right...almost certainly the drive flange.

What torque should be on the cv nut?

It's completely loose :-(

Disc or drum brakes on the front?

Drum Brakes 60 lbf/ft 83Nm

Disc Brakes 150lbf/ft 207Nm

You may find that they may continue to groan after this point as the drive flange may already be worn from the movement. But give it a go.

There will be a reason it is loose however. Was there a split pin in place?

Drums...

Split pin was in... but the nut was loose.. i could twist it with my fingers...

I've tightened it up and took it for a drive... everything seemed fine... im pretty sure the sound was the drum rubbing on the backing plate... there was a heap of movement once i'd jacked it up.

Do you think it was just loose for a while and I didn't notice it? I dont see how it could losen while the split pin was in there... seems strange.

The noise would have been obvious pretty well straight away.

I'm not sure why it would come loose, but its not a good sign. I would keep a very close eye on the wheel and nut.

I would also be having a look at the other side just to make sure the nut is not loose there as well. Whoever dealt with the side you have found more than likely worked on the other side as well. If they incorrectly assembled one side chances are they incorrectly assembled the opposite side.

I would suggest your wheel bearing may be on the way out?
Tighten it up and keep an eye on it

yeah i checked both, otherside seemed fine... i'll keep and eye on it this week and jack it up again next weekend to make sure its stays tight.

thanks for all the help!

I had an S drive flange go away (as it turned out) crossing back across North America to home...fortunately within 1,200 km. of home.

The castle nut was finger tight/loose and I was miles from parts or even an airport...so I tightened the nut on the S outer CV to 150 ft/lbs and headed home, going no faster than 80 km/h and tip-toeing around left hand corners/bends (as the problem hub was right front).

On getting home there was still 75 ft/lbs of torque on the nut and, on disassembly, it was flange failure. Almost certainly the result of the shock on hitting a big pothole on the Interstate while crossing Missouri causing the torque to release.

Do check the torque again after a bit of driving. Drum brake drive flanges, though of different design to the S, can fail in a similar way. If the torque is down, get a new drive flange.
