Most likely. $1000 is the cut off for products and freight total if you want to avoid duty. |

Just ask them to undervalue the shipment. |

Whilst the cutoff is $1000 it certainly isn't hard and fast when it comes to private parcels, can be hit and miss really though I have never been hit with it yet on any of my orders that have been over 1k |

I've been hit plenty of times, unfortunately this supplier won't supply an altered receipt. I thought it was only for the goods and the postage didn't count ![]() |

I've been hit when they have included postage. The freight forwarders are the people who do the taxing on behalf of customs, and they really don't give a rats. I've been missed as well when I should have coughed up more when they misread pounds Stg as Oz dollars... |

Yer mick that's why I'm confused, I thought it was for the product to be imported and doesn't include the postage and can anyone confirm? |

If they hit you it will be on the postage too. I have only been caught once and I told them it was parts for a vintage car. Was delivered the next day with nothing to pay. |

I thought postage was excluded, but if I am reading right, it is not. Read below: http://www.customs.gov.au/site/importin ... calculated Quote: GST is paid on the Value of the Taxable Importation (VoTI). The VoTI is the sum of the Customs value, transport and insurance costs (or postage and insurance) plus any duty payable and WET payable.
Below is an example calculation for an electric sound amplifier with a duty rate of 5%. The purchase price was US$1,274 and the exchange rate on the day it was exported was 0.9100 (A$1 = US$0.91). The postage and insurance was US$118.30 Customs value converted to Australian currency = US$1274/0.9100 = A$1,400.00 Postage and insurance converted = US$118.30/0.9100 = A$130.00 Duty (amount payable) = 5% of A$1,400 = A$70.00 VoTI = (customs value + duty + postage and insurance) = A$1,400 + A$70 + A$130 = A$1600.00 GST = 10% of VoTI (amount payable) = 10% of A$1,600 = A$160.00 Amount payable to Customs and Border Protection Duty + GST = A$70.00 + A$160 = A$230.00 Plus import declaration (lodged by document) processing charge of A$48.85 Total payable = A$230.00 + A$48.85 = A$278.85 |

Gifting won't do it either. I specifically read that one! Quote: If somebody sends you a gift from overseas that includes tobacco and/or alcohol products you are liable to pay the customs duty, GST and Wine Equalisation Tax (WET) (if applicable) as assessed on those products. Years ago it used to help (pre GST taxes) to send an 850 head over to the UK to have a 1275 one sent back. It was classified exchange in that case... |

My experience is that the $1000 is inclusive of shipping costs. I doesn't seem fair that you can get slugged with Import duty and then slugged again with GST on the combined value including the shipping and Import Duty. They're actually taxing the tax you've paid. In your circumstance, I'd split the order into 2 separate purchases with separate invoices and shipped separately. You'll pay more in shipping, but avoid duty and taxes. |
