Post subject:  Help needed - potential purchase....

Hi

I wonder can anyone provide me with some advice regarding a car I've seen for sale?

I'm based in Ireland and I've seen an Australian model 1968 Morris Cooper S for sale. I've always wanted an Australian car and I've seen this one advertised for sale (it's a long way from me and I would have to purchase based on photos/description rather than viewing). I had assumed all Australian Cooper S cars had hydrolastic suspension and I notice that this car does not and I was wondering if this is correct or has the car been changed over to dry at some stage? If it has been changed do you think this would have a big impact on the car's value?

From the photos the car looks very good and original and all numbers seem to tally, interested to get your thoughts.

(Can't work out how to attach pictures so if anyone can tell me howto do this I'll attach a few....)

Thanks

Paul

Oh, that is a complicating feature...

All our Australian built Cooper S were wet (hydro) cars. The Cooper 997 and 998 were built with dry suspension.
It was reasonably common to see cars converted to dry

Paul - see this viewtopic.php?f=25&t=10405

I use Photobucket but other image hosters are OK.

Post as many views of the car as you can and you will get plenty of responses and opinions.

From the pictures, the right features are there, but its impossible to tell. Particularly with such small photos. You're best to find someone over there you can trust to have a look, or who may know the car.

A fake might be picked up easily over here, but send it to USA and hardly anyone has the background to tell exactly what it is or is not.

Have a read of this thread from a bloke in USA who is restoring one. Haven't heard from him in a while but he may know if it or may have contacts.

Has the right ID plate .. and certainly looks the part. Do the numbers stamped on the body match?? Check the rad shroud..where UK cars wear their chassis plate. Look for a small stamping M2 over 60 (I think that's right..experts??)

Cheers, Ian

On the radiator shroud...
M2
06 and a body number about 500 lower than the car number.

Car number on firewall behind the master cylinders below the ID plate. Car number should match the ID plate.

Try To get someone in the US that knows Australian Mini's to have a look at it.
But I must say My first concern is the wiper motor.
it is hard to tell in the photo but behind the wiper motor appears to be
the mounting holes for the earlier wiper motor, I have never seen this from
the factory, the scuttle panel appears to be correct for the wiper motor fitted.
This could mean however that a later wiper motor was fitted to an earlier body
and the scuttle panel was changed to match, May still be a Cooper S But I would
like that explained if it was Me
In Australia there is a big difference in price between a genuine Cooper S
and A Replica or look a like, However if a look alike is available at a look a like price
and You have been told the truth, there is nothing wrong with owning one.
I must add that there is a lot of other things about the car that does look correct
to Me
