Just wondering what cheap engine oil people are using tor"run in" mini engines these days. It's only goung to be in for a very short time, hence why "cheap".

I use kmart 20w50 which is $15 for 4ltrs.. I use it as a normal oil but its cheap enough to buy as a run in oil.

The kmart oil was once hailed as being the best oil for a mini - but I believe they changed their supplier. I never bought it so I can't comment on it's quality. I've ben using Valvoline XLD Classic, and its been pretty good at maintaining good pressure at all temps and revs. Wait until it's on special at supercrap - you can sometimes get it for $10/5ltrs.

Same here ^^^ I'd use KMX 20W/50 or Valvoline Classic 20W/50.

KMX 20W/50 for running in, Valvoline Classic 20W/50 thereafter.

I have used the Valvoline running in oil myself and I know other people that have used it and all engines involved have become oil burners.
I will never use it again and always use just a cheaper multi grade oil like XLD etc which will be cheaper than the running in oil anyway.
The running in oil is very thin and seems to have no body to it at all.
Hope this helps

Buy a cheap 20/50 oil from a supermarket , don't use a Friction Modified oil .

I also bought a car with a reco 1098 in, running this Valvoline running in oil.
It was so thin that I had to prime the oil pump after it had been standing only 4 months (after being run before).
I reckon it's too thin for a Mini.

Interestingly enough I was looking at a 70 Owners Manual (Clubman 1098... although the official designation used is just "Mini") last night and it lists 10W30 as a suitable oil for general use. Running in Oil is straight 30 wt. There's no way such an oil would ruin rings/bores in the short time it should be used. A small amount of wear is what you are looking for to mate the rings with the bore....

I found that with 10W60 I didn't need to prime the pump after 4 years of storage so I can't see 30 wt running away in a few months ..unless there was some other issue involved....

I must admit mine does throw out a few puffs - but after 25 years that's not really unexpected.

Yer pays yer money and takes yer chances.....

Cheers, Ian
