Post subject:  Articulated bonnet hinges
I've been looking at these hinges recently and they seem to be a convenient modification as I have hit my head several times on the inside of the bonnet of a larger car and I don't want to experience that with the mini.

But before I make the commitment to purchase them I was wondering if anyone has any experience with these hinges or something similar. Also with the part being from a UK mini would there be any extra stuffing around for putting them on an Aussie mini?

Hey I'm currently testing the prototype gear in my clubby. The hinge itself is not the problem between the UK and AUS ones (assuming you get the clubman ones), the issue lies in this triangular stiffening bracket which another bracket attaches on to and a gas strut goes onto it. It's pretty cool because then it kinda pushes itself up as you open it and you don't need the bonnet prop no more.

Could you leave the gas struts out or do they need to be in there for the mechanism to work properly? Not like the bonnet is that heavy anyway.

Given the number of accessories you can get for Minis I'm surprised these haven't been around for longer - some of the 70's and 80's mercs had hinges like that which allowed you to open the bonnet 90 degrees.

I reckon I've probably got scar tissue on the back of my head from hitting the catch on my Minis. Guess they must be popular if they're on backorder... :lol:

You could leave the gas struts out as the bonnet is not THAT heavy but it's a little bit sketchy if it's on a hill or it's windy, that's why it was designed with the gas struts, I've been using it for several months now without gas struts and have only just put them in recently. The struts are pretty nice though :)

Telephoned the dude at Minivation today and have ordered their roundy kit with struts.
He said parts would be available from their supplier mid May.
P&P was reasonable

Ooo.... I might order some myself.

Not only do I have the scars on the top of my head from hitting the bonnet all the time but being able to get rid of the bonnet stay (that never stays in the plastic clip to then rattle away under the bonnet when driving!) will be a bonus :D

It looks to be very similar to a Mk1 Golf GTI front lip. They are a popular modification in the Japanese and Euro car scenes. You might need to narrow it a little to fit a mini?
