G'day fellas, picked up a heap of parts yesterday and just wandering I have 4 cranks 2 cooper s and 2 large journal 1100 s cranks. I had a fella tell me that if you tap a crank and it doesn't ring it's cracked.... Is this the case all the time? Because one crank doesn't ring like the others. Also got 10 1275 primary gears 40mm weber n lynx manifold, twin cooper s su's and a few other bits and bobs so some of these wil be in the for sale section over the next week or so keep your eyes peeled.

Curious, which crank sounds dull?

I'll have to have another look but I think it's one of the 1100s cranks

Sounding dull is a pretty good indicator of a crack but it's not infallible.
Conversely I've had ringers that were found cracked when magnafluxed or dyechecked.

[edit] Stand it on one end and then ding a web with a spanner. Repeat with it standing on the other end. This can help isolate where the crack is, if one way rings and the other is flat.

as said before, it may still be cracked even if it does ring
In my opinion if it holds the ring for a fair period of time
it is usually a very good bet it is not cracked,
I has always been My experience that if it does not ring
it is cracked, That is not to say it cannot happen.
but I would not buy a crank that did not ring

I won't buy a crank unless I dyecheck it first...
There are several other detection methods but dyecheck is cheap and cheerful, it works fine on surface cracks.

So what's a ballpark figure of a dyecheck?

No idea what it costs, as mine came `gratis'
