So has anyone got any pics of boxes they've fabricated to allow a bit more breathing space for a weber on a 3.75" manifold. I've seen the pics and threads that suggest it will fit with some coercion of the bulkhead with a effin big hammer... But surely someone has gone down the subtle route and made a box to nearly enter the cockpit without disturbing the doings of the Speedo et al. Im hoping this is possible without packing the binnacle out too, but lol do it if I have to. Weber will run a ramair trumpet sock on minimum 25mm ram tubes. Filters 90mm deep x 84mm high.

And to clarify, I mean fabricated following measurements, not the insertion of a battery box or after market Weber box and conceding there is no room for the centre Speedo/binnacle.

Surely this can't be true! I've seen one on a UK forum.

You evidently feel fairly passionate about this. Why don't you contact the person on the UK forum and ask them how they did it?

The first one is just a weber box (you can buy these, no issue). However, as you can see the speedo protrudes along way past the dash rails (not Group N legal - for example) and looks silly.

The second one is also just a shallower weber box, but the speedo is that close I don't know how they have done it and whether the speedo actually works? One of the issues is connecting the speedo cable as it gets in the way. To address this you can put a right angle drive on the back but that then causes other fouling issues.

I would have thought you could take the speedo and make a box behind it as close to the rear of the clocks as possible, then you know how much room is left?
It would be a start to fit the dash and trumpets and try to plan a box to fit in between
The speedo cable could perhaps run out of the box, in between the trumpets?

This link shows a install with just a big hole, no box, good for an idea of the space though

Lillee put a Weber box in his, then found he needed to both move the speedo into the cabin and fit a 90deg angle drive.
He found the box too small for a decent size K&N, the small K&N was too restrictive. So he put socks on. Note his manifold is a 5" RE one though.

Mine has a Redline 3005, fits OK with an offset Ramflo filter and no Weber box. I machined the manifold/carby flange up 3deg, to kick the air filter up clear of the speedo cable.

That's crazy... glad I got mine before they went too insane...

Check these for a more reasonable price....

( I've bought a few things off AES and are good to deal with)

And don't forget local...

Here's a shot of the allowable Group N spec airbox. The speedo binacle has a 1" spacer behind it to move it further into the cabin, but it remains inside and behind the top and bottom dash rails. All instruments including the speedo still work (you can just see the speedo cable between the socks in the picture). The biggest hassle is re-routing the wiring loom from the centre of the dash/firewall over to the side. The second picture shows the manifold / carby / ram tube set up. There is room to run a longer manifold with smaller filters or no filters at all.

Edit 1. -
I found this in my archives:

PROPOSAL TO ALLOW THE INSTALLATION OF A CARBURETTOR BOX ON GROUP N MINIS

Background
The Mini body has an opening in the engine bay firewall behind the instrument cluster. This opening has no restriction to the entry of fluid or fumes to the interior of the car from the engine bay. The Mini instruments ( speedo, fuel gauge and oil pressure gauge ) are mounted to the instrument housing and there is a plastic cover that covers the area behind the instrument panel to the firewall. This plastic cover is all that separates the engine bay to the car interior

When a Mini is modified for competition by the addition of a Weber carburettor, the intake tubes of the carburettor can intrude through this hole into the car’s interior. The Weber carburettor’s fuel intake pipe is also at the edge of this opening.

This area has been of concern to Mini competitors due to possibility of fuel and fumes entering the car’s interior. The problem has been to how to seal off this area and not infringe the Group N regulations.

Long time Mini competitor, Ted Brewster, has designed a carburettor box that will seal off the engine bay to the interior with minimum of modification to the firewall.

Proposal
This proposal is to allow the modification of the engine firewall and allow the moving of the instrument cluster to permit the installation of this carburettor box.

The proposed box would be attached to the firewall by an integral flange on the engine side of the firewall and have the maximum front opening dimensions of 175mm high x 215mm wide measured at the face of the firewall. These dimensions only require a minimum amount of modification to the original firewall opening. The depth of the box would not be specified, however there would be a limit to the modifications to the car’s dashboard to retain the original appearance.
WHEN INSTALLED THE BOX MUST BE SELF DRAINING AWAY FROM THE CABIN COMPARTMENT INTERIOR.

The speedometer (including the original face, speed needle, trip meter, fuel gauge, glass and bezel), temperature gauge and oil pressure gauge must appear original and be retained in the original instrument housing. The instrument panel may be moved toward the interior of the car to a point where the speedometer bezel is in line with front of the top of the dashboard and the front of the parcel shelf. Refer photographs.

The freedom to install this carburettor box could be included in the Specification Sheets of the Group NB and NC Mini.

Conclusion
The box proposed provides a safe fluid and fumes firewall between the engine bay and the car interior. It does not detract from the visible originality of the car’s engine bay or interior. The box provides no performance advantage. The front opening dimensions would not provide a much greater area for the installation of cold air tubes than is currently available with the standard opening.

The compliance of the box can be easily checked with the maximum opening prescribed and the checking of the instrument panel and its placement.

Edit 2. The depth of the box that I made for my car is 40mm at the top and 110mm at the bottom. Hope that helps.
