Post subject:  Mini Matic vs Mini Deluxe - differences

Hi guys,
Long time no post.

I am looking to replace my Moke that was stolen last month, with a tin top.

I had a look at what is badged as a Deluxe earlier this afternoon.
It has the plate fitted with body prefix YMA2S4 which is a Matic.
This is true down to the large accelerator pedal.
It has the hydro system still.
It is fitted with a rod change 1098 engine.

Just wondering what other body differences there were between the Deluxe and Matic?

Any help appreciated. Cheers,
Will.

Matic has 850 style magic wand hole in floor for shifter cable, but no hole for remote shift.
Shifter box is bolted on top of floor.
Also has Matic heater which was optional on a Deluxe.
Has no clutch pedal, there was a spacer on there instead.

Other than that, are much the same animal. Brakes and suspension are the same.

Later Matics (YA2S5) are much the same as all above, relative to a Mini K.

The Matic has extra wiring to the neutral inhibitor switch on the gearshift.
The Matic should have a solid cap on the starter solenoid instead of a rubber on the push button.
The Matic speedo will probably be calibrated for the different diff ratio!
The front subframe is slightly wider between the engine mounts and I think the front rail on the frame may be shaped differently. (it is on the 1100 Autos!)

My car is a YMA2S4 body 1606. What's the body number on that one?

Yes it is just as you say. You can however put a manual box into an auto frame, with 3/8" packing plates under the mounts.

The matic has a black oval centre mount for the speedo, oil pressure gauge and fuel gauge.
It also has a transmission protection bar which mounts to the front of the subframe.

 It could also be said that the Mini Matic owner is much more refine, intelligent and generally more modest than the average Mini Delux owner.

The Matic and Deluxe share the same instruments.
The Matic Mk2 and the K share the same instruments.

So in this instance, a YMA2S4 would have the beige/white single (speedo) gauge?

Yep.
If it has the single speedo it would have had a generator, a blinker switch with the green light on the end and the horn button in the middle of the wheel.

It's a bit of a bitser... has a 1098 Rod change with alternator, and the steering column, indicator stalk, and ignition barrel from the same car - bummer!
All easy fix-ups though.

Yep, all the bits my car used to have.

I've heard this also ;-)

Rumour has it that a 1098 fitted Mini-Matic is often referred to as the 'Godzilla' of the mini world. Of course this could be complete fiction, and I may have made it up just a few seconds ago :P

There is a `Matic in Sydney with a 1430? stroker in it, it made 112HP at the crank on the engine dyno but only did mid 18s down the 1/4 mile drags.

The low torque converter stall speed and HP losses in the box is a problem for draggin', I bet it makes a nice daily driver though! 8)
