More of a question out of curiosity, I've been looking (dreaming) at 5 speed gear sets, by kad and minispares, but they only seem to make sets available for a+ rod change boxes. Is it possible to fit one of these sets to a remote gearbox (morris 1100s). My search of this site came up with only one hit (see below) Has anyone ever driven or own a 5 speed in oz? I think Brett on here runs a 5 speed in his mk 1 s. Could be wrong but I'm pretty sure he does. |

Where the selector shaft and toggle fits in a remote type box, is the area the extra gears are fitted for the five speed hence rod change only |

Why not convert 1100 to rod change, shouldn't be a big drama. |

John might remember this- Back in the mists of time there was a 5 speed Colotti box (made in Italy) for race Minis. The 5 gears were all crammed into the original gear space, if my memory is correct.... I don't think many were made and they cost a bomb at the time. There was also the KG Engineering 5 & 6 speed straight cut boxes from Melbourne that John used to sell, I remember drooling in the Mini Kingdom shop back then. These were remote boxes I think? John?? |

No They were Rod change It was Darryl Gretgrix (The G in KG engineering ) who explained to Me why they did not put Five or six speed gears in the remote type Box they also made 5 and 6 speed dog boxes which I sold to Japan as quick as I could get them |

From kad, confirms what john has already stated. Hi Dave, Fay asked me to answer your question on the 5 speed in a remote case. It is quite involved to fit the 5 speed into a remote casing, any remote casing. Whilst it is possible to make selector forks the additional problem is that the throw on the gears is different so the detent spring positions need to be altered and then the shift position is also different. We made one custom kit to suit a remote box ages ago but it was a lot of work. We've never done any production parts for these as they wouldn't have been eligible for historic racing so the only potential market couldn't use them anyway. Righto, so naturally next question is, can a remote box be removed and a+ rod gearbox mounted without to many headaches? |

Sure can, however you might want to add another steady or 2. Otherwise the rodchange ones rock about like an 850 did. The best feature of the remote box was the mounting back in the tunnel, it acted as a giant torque arm to resist the torque reaction. |

Pete the motor is from a morris 1100s in a clubman and it's not standard. |

If you are really looking into 5speed boxes don't forget the importance of the ratios. That minispares one is good for cruising the highway but the KAD one is for the race track really. |

Grant I'll go out on a limb here and say that most people who opt for a 5 speed for the street are doing so do gain that over-driven 5th gear. The KAD box 5th is 1:1, so is more of a super close ratio box than a 5 speed with the benefit that most people will be thinking of. |
